Position Summary/Description:


The Hazardous Materials Specialist carries out the duties of packaging, documenting, and transporting waste to EHS-Environmental Affairs facilities with oversight from the supervisor. The position works independently to review and confirm waste classifications pursuant to RCRA/NRC characteristic and/or listed waste designations, as well as classification necessary for the safe transport of waste including hazardous waste pursuant to DOT, RCRA and NRC transportation regulations. This position may seek input and guidance from the supervisor or other subject matter experts in the Health and Safety Office for complex or difficult issues relating to the waste identification, repackaging, segregation, documentation, and transportation of chemical wastes including hazardous waste. Position may also perform wipe tests on the Radiation Only vehicle and packages shipped for compliance per EHS-Radiation Safety guidelines.
This position will assist the University's laboratory research facilities in managing waste including hazardous, radioactive and mixed waste, and universal waste. This position will also provide technical assistance on hazardous waste accumulation and storage requirements for non-laboratory areas. This position assists the University's Emergency Response Team for response to chemical spills and releases. This position also serves to determine which laboratory chemicals should become part of the University's laboratory chemical recycling program. This position ultimately reports to the Hazardous Materials Manager.

Education and Experience:


Four year degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require specific certifications or licenses. Specific jobs will require additional minimum training and/or licensing upon selection.
