Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science is searching for a motivated Hardware Engineer to join the Unix Engineering Team. Our ideal candidate must have the ability to work within a group or independently where teamwork and attention to details are critical. The Hardware Engineer will be planning, coordinating, and installing IT hardware (servers, workstations, network, etc) and fixing of hardware components.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Hardware installation for high-performance computing clusters and Linux servers
  • Provide technical support for hardware issues, especially GPUs
  • Fix, repair, replace hardware and work with vendors to correct hardware issues (submit RMAs, etc)
  • Develop and document test strategies for testing and resolving hardware issues
  • Work with the machine room staff on installation of racks, PDUs, UPS(es) and electrical circuits to support servers and associated equipment
  • Work as a liaison between operations staff and senior engineers on capacity planning for individual racks within the machine rooms.
  • Coordinate with other staff members the placement and installation of hardware
  • Participate in resolving hardware requirements to meet the facility and staff requirements
  • Installation of operating system on desktop servers and workstations

You should demonstrate:

  • Command line experience with Linux
  • Knowledge of Server Hardware and testing of hardware components
  • Understanding of Network hardware (Infiband, Ethernet, switches, etc)
  • Excellent problem solving and planning skills

Qualifications:

  • Ability to lift and rack equipment up to 50lbs
  • Knowledge of data center procedures and safety practices
  • An Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Hardware Engineer
  • Or a combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated
