Position Overview
This position will install and maintain a variety of hardscape surfaces such as concrete, stone walkways, retaining walls, gravel and asphalt at university facilities. The position will operate heavy equipment and provide support for completion of tasks and projects led by trade groups.
Duties may include:
  • Assisting with the routine upkeep and repair of campus exteriors
  • Supporting other shops by performing specialized duties or instructing others in specialized trade skills
  • Performing or instructing others in the operation, maintenance and repair of hardscape equipment as needed
  • Installing and repairing signage
  • Performing flagger traffic control duties as needed for hardscape team projects
  • Grading and maintaining farm roads
  • Cleaning streets, parking lots and major campus walkways
  • Participating in snow removal
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications


Required Experience
Two years in one or more of the following skilled trades areas:
  • Heavy equipment operation and repair
  • Hand and power equipment use
  • Project and plan review
  • Snow and ice mitigation
  • Experience in asphalt and concrete installation, maintenance and repair
Required Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
Required Other
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving university-owned vehicles
  • Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement or be able to obtain one within six months of hire and participate in the Department of Transport (DOT) Drug Testing Program
Additional Preferred
  • Two years of post-secondary education or training in construction, construction management or mechanical repair
  • Operator certifications in loader, backhoe, grader, roller, excavator, street sweeper, forklift and uni-loader
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Must be able to:
  • Bend, stoop and work in awkward positions for several hours at a time
  • Carry, lift and/or otherwise move items weighing up to 90 pounds
  • Stand and walk continuously throughout the workday
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing duties
  • Work in inclement weather conditions
  • Work on uneven and slick surfaces
