Overview:  

We are seeking a Group Lead for the Geomatics Group who will lead a group of talented R&D professionals and establish them as a premier R&D organization by setting a vision, developing a research strategy to achieve that vision, and enabling true impact on critical national security missions through a team-based approach and commitment to excellence. This position resides in the Geographic Data Sciences Section in the Geospatial Science and Human Security Division, National Security Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our team, you will lead and conduct research and development in geodetic, geophysical and photogrammetric sciences to research and develop solutions for gathering, storing, processing, and delivering spatially referenced information. The Geomatics Group is an R&D science group that encompasses expertise in the fields of surveying, mapping, remote sensing (LiDAR or HDS Scanning), photogrammetry, hydrography, global positioning systems (GPS), and geographic information systems (GIS). Working closely with research groups across the Section and Division, the team conducts research on behalf of a variety of government sponsors focused on energy and infrastructure as well as defense, intelligence, climate, and food security issues.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as immediate supervisor for R&D staff members in group.
  • Think innovatively about the science of geomatics to support workflows in high-performance computing environments.
  • Initiate, lead, and perform independent and impactful R&D on an ongoing basis as evidenced by, for example, innovative S&T delivered to sponsors, successful proposals, S&T presentations, professional community engagement, inventions/patents/copyrights, publications as appropriate, etc.
  • Develop a vision and implement a cohesive group research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects to position the group for future success.
  • Assist staff in setting performance goals consistent with the group’s strategy and members’ long-term career goals. Provide feedback to address performance issues in a timely manner.
  • Provide relevant input to assist the R&D Section Head with staff development while providing direct and impactful guidance to staff on regular basis.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in geomatics, photogrammetry, geodetic or geophysical sciences (or a related discipline) with a minimum of 6 years relevant experience or a M.S. with a minimum of 15 years relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to write winning proposals to government agencies in national security.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead national security projects as principal investigator.
  • Demonstrated ability to make significant technical contributions to projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to present scientific results to sponsors and technical communities, as well as at professional society conferences and workshops.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a strong commitment to a team environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated track record of research and development leadership in national and/or international engagements that seek to sustain and strengthen the national security community.
  • Experience working for or collaborating with DOE National Laboratories (or similar R&D organizations). 
  • Experience with geographical information systems (GIS).
  • Experience with stereo imagery, LIDAR, and other 3D sensing capabilities.
  • Proficient in a Linux OS environment.
  • Familiarity with the basics of machine learning and high-performance computing (HPC).
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Q clearance with SCI:  This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.  In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
