The Facilities Services invites applications for a Groundskeeper II to oversee general ground work and provide limited supervision and training of Groundskeeper I, Temps and students. 

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in regular meetings and safety trainings
  • Works in a safe manner and ensures proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Reports building irregularities to Grounds Manager
  • Performs turf maintenance, landscaping maintenance, general floriculture maintenance and tree maintenance
  • Perform general grounds cleanup including picking up debris, leaf mulching and removal, sweeping
  • Apply fertilization, pesticides and herbicides as an operator under a Pesticide Applicator’s license
  • Adjust and program irrigation clocks, install and repair minor irrigation issues
  • Snow removal including plowing, shoveling, de-icing and applying sand
  • Operation of various hand tools and power tools, light duty equipment and snow removal equipment
  • Ability to operates vehicle with lift as needed
  • Basic knowledge of computers
  • Any additional duties assigned by Grounds Manager
  • Conducting general training including safety, equipment operation, and general equipment procedures
  • Performing routine quality checks to inspect the work completed by others
  • Performing evaluations of student workers
  • Occasional required before/after- hours and weekend work.

Physical Requirements

(Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.)

  • Lifting:   Ground to 60 inches, up to 50 pounds. Ground to 30 inches, 80 pounds.
  • Carrying:   Front carry up to 50 pounds for 10 feet or less.  
  • Right and left hand carry up to 75 pounds for wheelbarrow handling.
  • Pushing and pulling forces required (pushing and pulling materials, and during the use of tools): 100 pounds sustained. 
  • Repetitive squatting on both even and uneven surfaces.
  • 3 minute overhead work from various positions (standing, crouching, or kneeling).
  • Static forward bending from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
  • Trunk rotation from a standing or kneeling position.
  • Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder.
  • Walking various distances, continuously, throughout the day on even and uneven surfaces.
  • Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2" to 5 1/2" circumference needing an average of 50 pounds of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 100 pounds).
  • Use of foot controls and hand controls to drive and operate light and heavy machinery.

Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment.


Minimum Required Experience
  • Knowledge and skill equivalent to a high school education and two (2) years of progressively responsible grounds experience or a combination of experience and education
  • Possess a current driver’s license
  • Ability to work long hours and occasional weekends

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to provide training where appropriate
  • Certification in forklift operations

The Mission of Facilities Services is to assist in the development of a physical environment supportive of teaching, research, and Administration on The University of Montana campus through the operation and maintenance of the state funded Physical Plant, and providing services to the auxiliaries as required.      Monday through Friday 6:30 am to 3:00 pm, 12 months/year

Salary:                          $18.005/hr

Union Affiliation:         FOCUS-MFPE

Probationary Period:  Six months minimum
