Job Summary
Bowdoin College is seeking a dedicated Groundskeeper to join our team. The Groundskeeper will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the College’s outdoor spaces, including lawns, gardens, athletic fields, and walkways. This position plays a vital role in preserving the beauty and functionality of the campus landscape.
Key responsibilities:
  • Perform routine grounds maintenance tasks, including mowing, edging, weeding, pruning, and planting.
  • Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment, such as lawn mowers, trimmers, blowers, and chainsaws.
  • Monitor and irrigate lawns, gardens, and landscape beds to ensure proper hydration and plant health.
  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of landscape features, such as retaining walls, and pathways.
  • Assist with Grounds maintenance (i.e., shoveling and salting sidewalks and pathways during snow storms) .
  • Collaborate with other members of the Facilities Management team to support campus events and special projects as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as directed by the Manager of Grounds & Landscaping or Assistant Manager of Grounds and Landscaping


Pay and Benefits:
  • Hourly rate: $18.00 /hour. This rate may be negotiable depending on the candidate’s level of experience and qualifications.

Education/Skills Requirements
Required:
  • High School or GED equivalent.
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must have good communication skills; be able to get along with co-workers, supervisors and building occupants; and be able to work.
  • Adherence to safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of proper equipment usage to ensure safety.
  • Willingness to adjust work schedules based on the needs of the grounds.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

Preferred:
  • Additional education or training in horticulture, landscaping, or related fields.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
Required:
  • Minimum one year of experience in groundskeeping and/or landscaping, mowing, edging, pruning, and maintaining lawns.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the requirements of the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy.
  • This position requires a criminal background check and pre-placement physical.
  • Ability to operate and maintain landscaping equipment.

Preferred:
  • Two or more years of experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or related outdoor work.
  • Knowledge of plant care, soil management, and pest control techniques.
Standard Work Days and Hours
  • Normal working hours are Monday – Friday 7am to 3:30pm.
  • Evening and weekend shifts are required during special events and heavy seasonal workloads.
  • This position is essential and will be required to work during emergencies and/or holidays.
