Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Grounds Services maintains approximately 758 acres of managed campus grounds and more than 700 acres of forest land/trails. Services provided by Grounds include the following: Landscape Maintenance, Irrigation, Integrated Pest Management, Landscape Installation, Stormwater Management, Forest Management and Trail Maintenance, Parking Lot Maintenance and Arboriculture.
Position Summary
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $3,974 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE:
$1,987 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $1,987 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.
This recruitment is for two Grounds Worker positions (#00033925 and #00062363). By applying, you will be considered for both positions.

Position is responsible for the cultivation, maintenance and promotion of plants, turf or a plant collection in an assigned program or geographical area of the University. Positions in this class observe and diagnose structural and horticultural problems. Work includes installation of all new plant material following plans and/or approved horticultural/grounds practices and procedures; maintaining the beds including pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing and spraying of plant material, which may include pesticides. This position is assigned a wide range of horticultural and landscape management duties to include assisting in cultural activities, spraying pesticides, equipment operation responsibilities, lawn and landscape renovations, landscape installations and repair of irrigation systems. Participates in landscape design and construction, supply and arrangement of special foliage for events, seasonal color coordinator, or promotes knowledge and understanding of the plants. Work requires the use of special tools for cultivation, maintenance and transportation of plants.
This position serves as part of the snow and ice management team during the winter months.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. NOTE: Some positions may require special licenses or certification.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Position must possess landscape maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of related technical training and experience; must have the ability to efficiently and safely operate road equipment; operate and maintain landscape equipment; effectively plant trees, plants, shrubs, etc.; closely monitor watering needs of plants during the warm season; effectively and safely apply herbicide, pesticides, and fungicides; and effectively communicate.
Requires experience in applying winter weather practices; and must be able to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions, including, but not limited to: a public health emergency, or situation that may require the University to close.
NC Driver’s License or ability to obtain one prior to start date.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Advanced level of landscape maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of related technical training and experience.

Valid NCDL
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Ability to withstand extreme weather conditions (ranging from hot and humid to cold and windy) during any time of the day or night; perform physically demanding work; able to climb, bend, stoop, lift, and walk behind or operate equipment on varied terrain for extended periods of time; move objects weighing 50 pounds; wear safety glasses, safety shoes and hearing protection.

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS

The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:
 
To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including without limitation the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system.


A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).

This SHRA Sign-on Bonus is contingent upon budget and final eligibility determination as of the effective date of hire. All recipients must sign the Pay Back Agreement form.
