Salary Range

$54,000 - $57,000 per year or commensurate of experience and education. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.


Essential Duties

  • Provide oversight and direction of the grounds services activities.
  • Plan and coordinate sectional operations and needs with appropriate personnel and other agencies.
  • Implement plans for maintaining grounds including recommendations for new plants, irrigation systems, replanting and reorganizing existing planting of lawn areas, shrubbery, shade and ornamental trees, flower beds, and all aspects of grounds construction.
  • Inspect and oversee both finished projects and work in progress to insure proper and satisfactory horticultural methods, work schedules, safety and other standards are maintained.
  • Instruct personnel in following appropriate safety standards and procedures.
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data, maintain records, and submit reports as required.
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets and control of activities required in maintaining a department operating within limits and/or approved budgets. 
  • Maintain up-to-date information on development in irrigation systems, soils, plants, insect control, herbicide, fertilizers, and other matters affecting grounds maintenance.
  • Develop, prepare, monitor, and track goals and objectives.
  • Develop and implement plans, policies, and procedures for the department.
  • Prepare and coordinate preparation of financial and administrative reports.

DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday; 5:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.


Minimum Qualifications

Six years of grounds maintenance work experience which includes two years of supervisory experience; OR, Associate’s degree in Horticulture or related field AND four years of grounds maintenance experience including two years of supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.  Technical training and/or professional certifications in landscape, horticulture, pest management, arboriculture and irrigation may be required for some incumbents and/or positions.


Desired Qualifications

Possess an Arizona Pesticide Applicator license, Arizona Landscape Contractors Association ACLP Certificate, ISA Arborist Certification, or similar industry certification(s)

Experience in:

  • Leading multiple grounds crews and groundskeeper specialists in daily grounds maintenance operations and seasonal landscape management.
  • Overseeing a ground maintenance contract/vendor administration
  • Budget administration
  • Planting and/or caring for turf, shrubs, flowers, plants and/or trees
  • Planning, scheduling and/or directing the application of fertilizers and/or herbicides
  • Customer service 
  • Using Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel)

Knowledge of:

  • Turf maintenance
  • Irrigation system maintenance, repair, and programming
  • Principles of horticulture 

Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills


Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Activities also require standing for varying lengths of time and walking distances outdoors to perform work which requires frequent bending, stooping, reaching, climbing ladders, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds and working outside in extreme temperatures and in dirty outdoor environment.
  • May be exposed to safety hazards, dangerous tools and equipment.
  • Drive University vehicles and/or carts.

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license upon employment and maintain throughout employment.  A Department of Motor Vehicle search will be conducted.  Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

Must pass pre-employment audiogram exam post offer of employment.
