ROLE of the POSITION

This position is responsible for maintenance of university grounds to include a wide variety of landscape and gardening duties such as, but not limited to, mowing, edging, line trimming, planting, rejuvenation, fertilization and weed control of landscape and flower beds utilizing a variety of hand tools and light to medium mechanized equipment such as mowers, pressure washers, forklifts and small tractors.  The incumbent will prepare new or rejuvenated landscape sites, and with assistance, install irrigation, topsoil, decorative material and appropriate plantings according to supervisor's instructions and/or landscape design plans.  Assistance in special events will also be required.

The incumbent must be able to identify plant diseases and undesirable pests and weeds associated with landscaping and apply corrective measure to eradicate them through the use of hand and powered tools and application of appropriate chemicals.

The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining grounds areas clean and free of trash, fallen leaves, standing water, snow and ice.  The person in this position will be required to report irrigation malfunctions to the appropriate personnel and may be required to make minor repairs on irrigation systems.

This person will be responsible for supervising Grounds Maintenance Workers 2's including work assignments, work review, disciplinary procedures and evaluations.  Must be able to independently prioritize and schedule grounds maintenance activities.  Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with varying levels of superiors and subordinates.  The incumbent must possess basic computer skills.  He or she will be responsible for training and safety of their crew as well as safety of their work area.  This position is also responsible for inventory and maintenance of assigned vehicle and tools.

Must obtain and maintain Man Lift and Forklift Operator Certifications within first 9 months of employment

A valid class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment and all certifications and licenses must be kept current as a condition of continued employment.

Work Schedule is currently 6:00am - 2:30pm Monday through Friday.  This schedule could be temporary or permanently adjusted should the needs of the University require.

QUALIFICATIONS

Three years of experience providing grounds maintenance service including landscape, garden or greenhouse maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year of experience as a Grounds Maintenance Worker IV in Nevada State service

SALARY

Grade 26 Step 1, salary $ 35,328.96. "Step" means the number assigned by the Division of Human Resource Management to identify a specific rate of pay within a grade. Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
