Job Summary

The Grounds Maintenance Specialist I and II are responsible for managing and maintaining an average of 35 acres. The area will be maintained in a neat, clean, beautiful manner that contributes to the atmosphere and purposes of Brigham Young University and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This is accomplished by performing landscaping duties that include general cleanliness; turf, tree, shrub and weed maintenance; water conservation through irrigation maintenance and repairs. Other essential duties include snow removal, reporting pest and disease problems, and flowerbed design and maintenance. He/she trains, mentors, and supervises a staff of 8 to 10 student employees who perform the same landscaping duties

Essential Functions

Employee Supervision/training - Safety, Public Relations, Maintenance and Inspections    

  • Mentor and instruct employees in gardening principles, safe equipment operation, maintenance, and tool usage 
  • Oversee completion and documentation of OSHA and BYU Mandated trainings 
  • Oversee completion of specific gardening LMS online trainings.
  • Oversee safe work place practices and provide necessary safety equipment
  • Operate all equipment in a safe and effective manner to minimize the risk of injury and property damage
  • Inspect, operate and maintain a clean university vehicles
  • Must have a positive attitude and ability to work in a team environment
  • Interact with University, MTC and Church employees/visitors in a professional manner.

  • Coordinate with University, MTC, Church facilities personnel to accommodate needs and schedules  

 Landscape Maintenance:

 As a working supervisor, this position performs and is responsible for supervision and completion of:   

  • General Cleanliness: picking up litter, changing garbage can liners, removing illegal fliers from sign posts, and cleaning up after each task
  • Turf maintenance: Edging sidewalks and curbs; string trim along tree rings and shrubs; mowing and clean up of grass clippings; reporting disease and pest problems 
  • Tree and shrub maintenance: Remove leaves, weed, composting; prune ground covers; hand prune shrubs. Fertilizer, pest and disease identification and communicate with service entities
  • Flower care and maintenance: Design, order, prepare, plant, water, weed, cultivate and deadhead flowers; communicate with service entities. Fertilize, disease and pest identification. 
  • Schedule and perform specialized tasks, such as, sodding, pruning, aerating, sprinkler audits, etc.
  • Maintain dead plant lists

Other Maintenance:

  • Sprinkler head maintenance: inspect, repair, adjust, and replace damaged sprinkler heads; report valve and line problems
  • Learn and operate WeatherTrak irrigation irrigation controls
  • Perform irrigation evaluations and audits
  • Coordinate hard surface maintenance: weed cracks; blow and sweep; report vandalism; coordinate with the Heavy/Specialized Equipment Supervisor for sweeper assistance. 
  • Assist Heavy/Specialized Equipment Supervisor with sweeper operation
  • Perform regular care and maintenance for all equipment 
  • Maintain dead plant list on the ArcGIS system.

Snow Removal:

  • In season 24/7 on call snow removal assignment and communication to ensure safety for the entire campus community 
  • Work in a team scope, cooperating with other snow removal teams

Other

  • Report to GM Lead supervisor
  • Special Events: coordinate with the Special Events Supervisor for activities and events in the area and provide needed support.
  • Hiring: coordinate with the Lead Supervisor and Grounds office staff regarding employment needs and hiring. Perform interviews as needed.
  • Conduct annual performance review with ¾ employees.

Education/Experience

Level 1 :

Minimum Required:   

  • 2 years full-time landscape experience 

Preferred: 

  • Associate degree in landscape management or 3+ years full-time landscape experience and Master Gardener certificate
  • LTC (Landscape Technician certification)
  • CIT (Certified Irrigation Technician)

Level 2 :

Minimum Required: 

  • 4 years full-time landscape experience or combination of Master Gardener Certificate

Preferred: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Management/Horticulture with 3+ years full-time landscape experience, which includes at least 2 years of supervisory experience
  • Pest applicator license
  • Master Gardener certification
  • QWEL (Quality Water Efficient Landscaper)
  • CGT (Certified Grounds Technician)
  • CLIA (Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor)
  • ISA (International Society of Arborists) Certificate

  • Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:

Required:

  • Ability to pass post-offer physical exam
  • Good supervising, mentoring, and training skills
  • Driving Medical Certificate

Preferred:

  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to work courteously with all MTC, temple patrons, and/or BYU employees, especially at times when problems arise
  • Ability to respect and adhere to safety guidelines.
  • Professional attitude and dress and adhere to the University's Honor Code
  • Effective computer and record keeping skills.
