Primary Purpose
The Grounds and Landscape Specialist performs a variety of complex grounds maintenance duties and specialized event work. The position assists in landscape design and plant selection; installs, maintains, and repairs irrigation systems; application of pesticides; repairs small machine grounds equipment; and helps coordinate campus events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Landscape Maintenance:
  • Perform a full range of landscape maintenance duties including turf maintenance, leaf removal, pruning shrubs and trees, spraying and fertilizing, lawn care and watering.
  • Repair, install and maintain irrigation systems. Dig trenches, lay pipes and install valves; review and check system to ensure proper and efficient operation.

Event Assistance:
  • Assist with event setup, teardown and redistribution of surplus equipment and furniture as needed.
  • Provide ADA transportation when needed.

Grounds Maintenance:
  • Maintain surface drainage by keeping catch basins free of debris during heavy rainstorms, and removing snow and ice in the winter months.
  • Sweep up or blow dirt and debris off ground surfaces, clean campus grounds and access areas Identify problems and report required maintenance.
  • Assist in the minor repairs of sidewalks, stairs and parking lots.
  • Equipment:
  • Properly operate a variety of hand power tools, equipment and machines associated with technical grounds maintenance.
  • Order parts and supplies as required. Maintain appropriate records, both computerized and manual, which includes processing work orders, chemical logs and pesticides, SDS and inventory sheets.

Additional Duties:
  • Daily operation of a pickup truck or utility cart to get to and from assigned areas on campus and run heavy equipment and rolling stock as directed.
  • Support the team in continuing tree management and pollinator habitat in coordination with the COCC Tree and Bee Campus USA designations since 2021.
  • Perform other essential duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Individuals must possess the listed knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The incumbent is expected to follow College work rules and policies. They are also expected to follow proper operational procedures in the use of grounds equipment, machinery, tools and supplies.
A Grounds & Landscape Specialist involves performing a variety of specialized and complex maintenance duties that require exercising greater independence, judgement and initiative in the performance of daily duties. Any deviations from operational rules and procedures must be reviewed with the supervisor, unless there is an emergency situation where an immediate decision must be made independently.
  • Knowledge of and skill in use of grounds and landscape equipment, including manufacturers and materials.
  • Knowledge of and ability to specialized grounds maintenance duties and operate maintenance equipment, tools and machines.
  • Knowledge and ability to maintain and repair irrigation / sprinkler systems.
  • Ability to effectively interact with all areas of campus life and establish relationships that are supportive of the College objectives.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using the English language with or without the use of an interpreter.
  • Ability to use two-way radios used in the field.
  • Must be proficient in the use of the computer software programs and internet use.
  • Must be accessible and available in the event of emergencies or when needed to meet the ongoing missions of the College.
  • Must be available for early morning and or late-night hours and weekends when snow or ice removal is necessary, and for other duties as required to meet the goals and mission of the College.
  • Ability to promote safety and teach staff safe and proper use of equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively with constituents from diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Ability to take direction, follow instructions, and perform assignments as assigned. Able to provide work direction to others.
  • Must be able to work independently and have demonstrated experience multi-tasking to set and adjust fast- changing priorities.
  • Ability to maintain departmental and campus areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assure compliance with established procedures and regulations.
  • Must be able to perform repetitive tasks daily for multiple continuous days.

Ergonomic Requirements
Work is performed primarily outdoors, on varying terrain (some potentially hazardous), in all types of extreme weather conditions and involves use of maintenance related substances. The incumbent is expected to follow College work rules and policies. This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. Incumbent is also expected to follow proper operational procedures in the use of grounds equipment, machinery, tools and supplies. Regularly required to operate demanding equipment. Position involves recurring early and late hours with exposure to hazardous chemicals, exposure to dirt¸ dust, fumes¸ pollen¸ noise extremes, insecticides, fungicide and fertilizer. Some work may occur at heightened elevations. Strength and agility, and extended standing and heavy lifting are required. The employee is regularly required use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Physical movements involve guiding, feeding materials into proper position. Lifting objects vary daily, ranging between 1 – 80 pounds. The incumbent must be able to climb trees and use ladders for pruning work, and walking long distances that may include stairways and hills. Must be able to climb or pull self upward, kneel, stoop, crawl and crouch. Computer screen is used less than 5 percent of the time. Position involves extended standing with some lifting less than 10 pounds for 40 percent of the time. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Requirements
Education
  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience
  • Two years’ work experience with lawn mowing, irrigation trouble shooting, and turf grass management.
