Monday – Friday (occasional weekends); flexible hours between 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
Pay Rate $16.00
Minimum Experience/Education
High School Diploma/GED. Experience with the care of Orchids.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Preferred experience growing/maintaining orchids.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage one’s own time efficiently and effectively.
  • Working knowledge of orchids, their care and materials needed.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work in collaboration with Greenhouse Manager and Horticulturists to improve the orchid collection of the Botanical Gardens.
  • Watering, fertilizing, dividing, propagating, and repotting orchids as needed.
  • Collaborate with other staff to research, source and purchase orchids for Gardens collection.
  • Collaborate with other staff to maintain and update orchid database.
  • Appropriately document flowering cycles.
  • Provide Greenhouse Manager with purchase requests for supplies needed.
Other Work/Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with garden staff to create orchid displays in McMillan Greenhouse.
  • Utilize, organize and maintain a variety of tools and materials.
  • Welcome guests to the Gardens and answer questions as needed.

Any non-permanent employee hired to work less than 30 hours per week (cumulative of all positions, or designated as variable hour worker – i.e. student workers) are measured during designated measurement periods. If they average 30 or more hours per week over a designated measurement period, they will be offered the chance to enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan, and will be notified of instructions.

  • Temporary hourly workers (eligibility based on FTE, duration of more than 30 days) FTE .75+ (cumulative of all jobs) or measured full-time, offered the high deductible health insurance
