Job Description:


Reporting to the Director of Publications and Design, the Graphic Designer will assist in conceptualizing, designing and producing strategically driven print and digital publications for Washington and Lee University. Their primary focus will be a variety of print including brochures, event programs, fundraising appeals, invitations, banners, posters, and outdoor graphics, as well as the institution's alumni magazine. Digital design will include social media posts, website materials, infographics, and additional items as required.

Essential Functions:

  • Works with internal clients to develop original, creative designs for projects including posters, brochures, invitations, event programs, fundraising appeals, maps, signs, handbooks, postcards, programs and newsletters, including digital versions as requested.

  • Creates accessible digital graphics for website, videos, social media, and email.

  • Facilitates and maintains relationships with vendors and their representatives to secure quality, cost effective external expert services. Visits vendor sites on occasion for printing production quality assurance.

  • Provides training and guidance on software such as Canva to facilitate self-service for internal customers where it is deemed beneficial to the university.

  • Maintains project databases for file retrieval as needed.

  • Assists with print and digital production processes, such as packaging and optimizing final files for delivery. May occasionally advise on product design in relation to postal distribution questions.

  • Researches and recommends new graphic design technologies.

  • Additional related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree required in graphic, digital, or communications design with a minimum of two years design and production experience in both digital and print or a combination of education and experience from which a similar skillset could be derived.  A bachelor’s degree is preferred.

  • Excellent creative design skills as demonstrated by a portfolio showcasing original, innovative work. Illustration abilities are beneficial but not required.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite software (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) on Mac platform is expected along with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Basic photography editing skills (editing, cropping, retouching, resizing) are essential. 

  • Must have the ability to work within established brand guidelines while maintaining design consistency.

  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail, with an ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines. 

  • Engagement with faculty, students and staff across campus requires the Graphic Designer to be a collaborative team player with the ability to communicate and work effectively and collegially with others. Strong asset management skills are essential, along with the ability to set and manage priorities with limited supervision.
