POSITION PURPOSE
The Visual Designer is responsible for the creative concepts, layout, and user interface (UI) design on a variety of communications projects in web, digital and print formats. These projects include, but are not limited to, websites, newsletters, online advertising, print collateral and other projects as assigned. The Visual Designer collaborates closely with web developers, marketing & communications staff, faculty, and departmental administrative staff throughout projects to produce final products. This position helps plan, create, develop, and disseminate digital assets, including websites and multimedia for websites, e-communications, and print materials designed to support the College of Arts & Sciences’ student recruitment and fundraising efforts.

The Visual Designer may also work in partnership with the Marketing and Communications team to execute print marketing communications projects, and may supervise the work of student interns, as required. This person works together, as assigned or as appropriate, with other constituent communications colleagues in the creation and development of on-brand, effective and consistent visual communications.

This position reports to the Associate Creative Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Support the College’s comprehensive student communications outreach and recruitment strategy by providing original graphic design for projects within approved brand guidelines. Projects include but are not limited to print collateral (brochures, signage, print ads, etc.); designing posts for social media, swag, and event materials; help determine design directions and style; help oversee the creative process from concept to completion. (30%)

Provide web design as needed, including wireframes, prototypes, mockups, UI design, image assets, and icons for use within the College’s content management system, Drupal. Responsibilities include developing and implementing project plans, individual components, and timelines. Manage the visual design process by ensuring adherence to schedules, project specifications, and budget limitations. Advise clients and partners on the practical applications of design and production techniques as tools of visual communications. (30%)

Design and produce print collateral to support the College’s advancement and frontline-fundraising efforts. Projects include, but are not limited to, case statements, impact reports, event invitations, infographics, wayfinding, and updating the College’s online toolkit of design assets and templates for staff use. Prepare and send files to press and manage print production process with vendors. (15%)

Support the College’s digital marketing efforts by designing and editing HTML emails in the University’s digital marketing platform, Marketo. Collaborate with marketing team members on layout, send tests on multiple e-mail platforms to ensure quality control and brand compliance. Design graphics and gather image assets for the College’s various social media accounts. (10%)

Provide design consultation and training to further brand compliance. (5%)

Participate on committees, and other forums that address the role of visual communications and web design within the University of Washington. (5%)

Other projects as assigned. (5%)

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Direction is received from the Associate Creative Director.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
This position may occasionally supervise the work of students.
