Graphic Designer

The Office of Communications and Marketing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is currently seeking applications for a graphic designer to join the creative team. Our team manages the university’s visual brand identity and editorial guidelines. The graphic designer creates visual assets and designs various collateral for print, digital, and multimedia applications that reflect the university's mission, vision, values and work within the established brand guidelines.

The Office of Communications and Marketing is dedicated to advancing the university’s reputation. Staff members support the institution’s mission and goals, promote its successes and achievements, inform and engage its stakeholders, and ensure the integrity of its brand. We craft audience-focused communications based on data, best-practices, and emerging trends. The division employs more than 50 full-time professionals across several cross-functional teams—Creative, Digital, Marketing, News, Special Events, Video, and WUOT 91.9FM.

 



Qualifications

 

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Creates high-quality graphics and visual designs for application across various channels—print, digital, and multimedia
  • Fully executes design projects based on existing brand guidelines for a variety of audiences and stakeholders
  • Demonstrates sound judgment, knowledge of industry standards, and best practices to create seamless user experiences through high-quality design
  • Works independently to apply designs and other key art to defined formats and platform specifications
  • Participates in brainstorming and ideation sessions, working collaboratively with other creative team members and project stakeholders.
  • Successfully communicates ideas, rationale, and specifics of design solutions.
  • Works under time constraints or to a deadline.
  • Responds collaboratively to project revisions, seeking solutions that meet best practices while understanding and resolving concerns from various subject matter experts

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to work within established brand guidelines
  • Working knowledge of industry standard design software
  • Working knowledge of best practices in print and digital communication
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills
  • Works independently as well as under guidance from senior team members
  • Works well under time constraints or to a deadline
  • Ability to balance multiple projects with varying degrees of complexity and involvement, prioritizing tasks appropriately

This position will work on creative that is applied across various channels, while not required experience working deeply in one of the these categories or some basic knowledge across all three would be a plus:

  • Print processes and techniques
  • Digital design principles and techniques (responsive layouts, basic CSS, fundamentals of good UX/UI)
  • Knowledge of video and photography production (including shooting, editing, retouching)

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma and at least 4 years professional experience in Graphic Design or related field; OR,
  • Associate's Degree and at least 3 years professional experience in Graphic Design or related field; OR,
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years professional experience in Graphic Design or related field

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years professional experience in Graphic Design or related field

Salary

The hiring range for this position is MR09. Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience.
