Position Overview

The University of Kansas Life Span Institute, SWIFT Education Center, is seeking an applicant to collaborate with Center staff and participate as a contributor to the mission of the Center through graphic representations and input for Center projects. The Graphic Designer position calls for a skilled, creative individual with experience in design and production of print, digital media, graphics, and informational materials. This position will work in collaboration with Center staff to design Google slide deck presentations, online learning modules, website content, and print materials to be used for informational, educational, and promotional initiatives, and provide services in the form of design layout, branding, identity compliance, and accessibility across multiple projects that support equity and justice initiatives for K-12 educational systems throughout the U.S.

Work will be performed under the supervision of the Director, Visual Arts and Content Curation.


Job Description

80% Create materials to meet the SWIFT Education Center’s strategic goals using a range of digital and print media. Specifically:

● Collaborate with and support SWIFT staff to produce thorough and complete graphics and maintain electronic files for this work.
● Suggest appropriate methods and messaging for graphic presentations, layouts, and other digital projects that support meaningful communication with target audiences (e.g., educators and families in marginalized communities; funding agencies with focus on equity and justice).
● Produce print and digital materials (e.g., presentations, reports) including layout, text and image editing using Adobe Creative Suite (inDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, etc.), Google products,and Articulate/Rise360.
● Consult with team members to review projects before further corrections are implemented.
● Comply with University policies, rules, and regulations regarding legal use of software, copyrights, and design standards. Ensure compliance with federal accessibility guidelines (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines or WCAG).

Participate in Center-wide meetings to contribute to and ensure understanding of its mission, values, strategies, and ongoing operations.

10% Other related duties as assigned which may include final proofing of print publications and assisting with events.


Position Requirements

  • If working from Lawrence, KS, this position will be a hybrid of on-site work  (Wakarusa Building) and telework as deemed by the supervisor.
  • If working from out of Lawrence, KS, this position will work remotely from home (telework), with availability to travel up to 10% of allocated time for Center meetings and conferences.
  •  Available for minimal travel nationally.

  • Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s in Arts degree in graphic design, or relevant field, plus at least 4 years of graphic design and production experience as evidenced by application materials.
  • Previous experience working independently and in a collaborative team environment as evidenced by application materials.
  • Presentation of portfolio samples to demonstrate a proven ability in design and development of branded materials that reflect sensitivity to principles of equity, justice, and intersectionality as evidenced by application materials.
  • Demonstrated experience with all software products in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Word/PowerPoint, Google Docs/Slides or similar software applications as evidenced by application materials.
  • Basic understanding of web technology, security, browsers, and web user interface and user experience design principles as evidenced by application materials.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  •  Knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Technical skills in testing and remediating for web and document accessibility.
  • Experience developing online learning modules with Articulate/Rise360.
  • Experience with WordPress website content management system.
  • Understanding of HyperText Markup Language (HTML) & Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) competency.
  • Knowledge of SWIFT branding and KU policies, rules, and regulations regarding legal use of software, copyrights, and design standards.
