Summary of Position: Reporting to the Ferris State University Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications or their delegate, the Graphic Designer will be a member of the Communications team at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD). The highly organized, articulate, and detail-oriented graphic designer will have a fundamental understanding of design and design processes, and be knowledgeable in the principles and techniques of design, typography, illustration, image assessment, production, marketing, branding, writing and editing. Responsibilities include but are not limited to concept, layout, design and production of original marketing and advertising materials, both print and digital, to create and enhance KCAD’s visual identity. Work on student recruitment projects is prioritized, but work may also include other projects for KCAD or Ferris State University Marketing and Communications.

Familiarity with mobile devices and digital publishing processes
Familiarity with social media platforms
Familiarity with basic web publishing and coding
Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud
Understanding of user interface/UX design
Photo, video, illustration, creative writing or other related skills
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Create work of high visual and conceptual quality that is appropriate to the intended audience and exists within the framework of the college’s overall visual identity.
Ensure that all projects are accurate, on time, within budget and meet KCAD and FSU brand standards.
Facilitate clear, timely communication with clients, staff, and vendors.
Maintain organized files and workflow.
Research and learn new technology/software as needed to maintain a current skill set including but not limited to: Adobe Design software (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat) and Microsoft Office.
Coordinate projects with Communications team members and Ferris State University Marketing and Communications.
Assist with implementation and oversight of College’s graphic and copy standards.
Research, brainstorm, and implement strong concepts.
Manage project schedules and maintain timelines.
Create compelling print and digital visual design.
Select appropriate project elements (photography, video, illustration, font, etc.).
Incorporate feedback and changes into projects.
Ensure materials meet accessibility standards.
Review and finalize files for print or digital production.
Proof designs for accuracy of content.
Review pre-press materials.
Create specifications for cost-effective bids.
Maintain excellent relationships with clients and vendors.
Manage production and purchasing with clients and vendors.
Participate in team meetings.
Maintain Communications Office archives (digital and print).
Maintain the confidentiality of designated information.
Demonstrate an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Perform any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
Marginal Duties/Responsibilities: Update templates.
Write/proofread/edit copy as needed.
Coordinate and implement photography or illustration needs.
Coordinate production and purchasing as needed.
Attend press checks.
Review and update kcad.edu website as needed.
Serve on college or university committees as assigned.
Skills and Abilities: Expertise in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat.
Competency with Microsoft 365.
Competency with print and digital production processes and methods.
Excellent grammar, writing, and proofing skills.
Proven time-management skills.
Demonstrated commitment, experience, and understanding for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
