Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Graphic Arts Technician creates programs, posters, and other graphic arts materials, finishes the layout of printed material; proofreads and edits copy; operate apparatus such as high volume digital printing equipment, wide format printing equipment, cutters, folders, and other equipment for graphic art needs; and performs related work as required.

The basic purpose of this work is to prepare finished layouts for duplication and printing. The position is expected to support the University's Strategic Enrollment Initiatives by supporting the creation of materials and designs associated with the effort.

EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares technical artwork such as design, layout, lettering, paste up and copy to produce printed materials such as brochures, forms, newsletters, and exhibits.

  • Draws sketches, charts, and graphs for documents such as budgets and reports of capital expenditures for presentation of data.

  • Proofreads and edits copy for form, accuracy, clarity, proper punctuation, spelling and grammar.

  • Operates printing and finishing equipment to produce various printed materials. Equipment includes but is not limited to high volume digital printers, wide format printers, envelope printers, cutters, folders, trimmers, and laminators.

  • Manages production queue and prioritizes orders based on due dates.

  • Determines the need for supplies and equipment necessary to complete assignments.

  • Reads journals and/or other publications to keep abreast of developments in the field.

  • Design and produce materials for departments throughout campus that support the University's Strategic Enrollment Initiatives. 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed on-site in the Print Services office. Print Production environment, prolonged periods of time spent sitting and/or standing. Frequent work at fast pace with unscheduled interruptions. Frequent computer usage at workstation throughout shift. The work schedule is 8:00am  - 4:00pm or 9:00am - 5:00pm and may occasionally require overtime with notification. University personnel and student contact position requiring appropriate apparel for work with digital printing and finishing equipment.


Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in graphic arts, graphic design, drawing or illustrating work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

Graduation from a recognized school above the high school level, with a major in graphic arts or graphic design may be substituted for the required experience.*

*Education toward such a certificate, diploma or degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to simultaneously work on multiple concurrent projects.
  • Experience with digital print production or bindery equipment.

Candidates who are bilingual in English and Spanish or English and Portuguese are strongly encouraged to apply.


Additional Information:

This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefits-eligible position in the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) bargaining unit with a union title of Graphic Arts Technician I. The bi-weekly pay rate is $1,874.61 (grade 14, step 1).
