About the Department
 

One of the first departments founded at the University of Chicago was the Department of Chemistry. Since then, The University of Chicago has been the recipient of more than 73 Nobel Prize recipients, 15 of which came from the Department of Chemistry. Our current faculty have considerable strength in inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, as well as well as in interdisciplinary research that delves into biology, physics, and materials science.


Job Summary
 

The job independently maintains and coordinates large scale grant and/or publishing projects. Develops proposals and creates project budgets, schedules, and the peer review process. Collaborates with authors to coordinate manuscript elements supplied by multiple faculty. Performs scientific structural editing and helps faculty to identify scientific weaknesses in their proposals, hypothesis, and scope of work.

Responsibilities

  • Working independently, coordinates grant proposals to support multiple faculty.  

  • Performs developmental editing for multiple grant proposals.

  • Develops grant proposals and creates project budgets, schedules, contributes to graphic presentation of data, and the peer review process.

  • Coordinates knowledge transfer between faculty to enable rapid adaption to new trends and requirements for various funding agencies.

  • Trains faculty and students on grant writing, how to become optimally competitive for funding and how to cater their proposals to specific funding agencies.

  • Performs scientific structural editing and helps faculty to identify scientific weaknesses in their proposals, hypothesis, and scope of work.

  • Facilitates sharing of proposals and tips between faculty applying to similar agencies.

  • Works directly with undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs on how to craft fellowship proposals (e.g. NSF GRFP, DoD NDSEG, NIH F30/F31), manuscripts, and job proposals. 

  • Responsible for the Copy edits of manuscripts for high profile papers, scientific press releases, tenure dossiers, and job proposals.  Interfaces with appropriate faculty, students, postdocs as necessary.

  • Develops, establishes, and communicates best practices for grant writing to faculty, students, and staff as appropriate.

  • Designs and maintains editing schedules and manages the proofreading, review, and correction of page proofs and additional proof stages.

  • Works with minimal guidance to edit complex manuscripts and other forms of copy for grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, form, sentence structure, clarity, consistency, and accuracy. Creates online and/or print versions of publications. Performs quality control checking at all stages of production for all written material in an editorial group.

  • Uses best practices and knowledge to write, update, and revise style notes for each assigned journal.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
