Scope of Job | To provide grant proposal development expertise to faculty members and research personnel to enable competitive individual and team extramural research funding and facilitate research excellence. Manage and plan the research, preparation, development and submission of grant proposals for the purposes of research project, including identifying external funding opportunities. |
Description of Duties | • Responsible for providing grant writing expertise, which may include: conducting and evaluating research, preparing and analyzing proposal budgets, and working collaboratively with internal and external personnel to develop grant proposals that support the research mission and goals of the university. • Maintains in-depth knowledge of faculty research interests, capabilities and activities. • Provides strategic and proactive proposal writing expertise to faculty members and researchers. • Provides advice and guidance to researchers and administrators on the application of grant funding policies, regulations, and procedures. • Oversees and provides guidance on the writing process that is complex in nature reaching across organizational levels. • Evaluates research capabilities within the University and assesses opportunities for grant and contract support. • Initiates and nurtures critical partnerships and alliances throughout the institution’s research enterprise, with institutional partners and other external stakeholders to increase institutional research competitiveness. • Provides analytical, technical and professional support in writing funding proposals, including development of hypotheses, aims, and objectives, grantsmanship and limited scientific review. • Counsels and assists junior faculty and assists senior faculty in these tasks. • Provides active leadership in the identification, solicitation, and cultivation of major funding agencies, to include State and Federal agencies, national laboratories, corporations, and foundations. • Identifies and maintains research alliances with potential collaborative partners and funding agencies to formulate and implement specific research projects. • Provides workshops on research funding agency requirements, interests and trends. • Monitors funding agency changes and priorities and identifies funding opportunities suited for faculty member(s) based upon their research expertise. • Acts as a liaison between all internal stakeholders, faculty, and funding agencies for activities related to proposal development and submission. • Serves as proposal development expert to staff and researchers. • May develop and coordinate research related events, such as research seminars and research symposiums. • Maintains currency of knowledge of grant funding policies, regulations, and procedures; disseminates and/or presents changes to departments and advises on the implementation of changes and on the impact of changes on funded operations. • Participates in university committees as appropriate. • Performs other duties as assigned. |

Required Education | Master’s Degree from an accredited university. |
Preferred Education | Doctoral degree from an accredited university. |
Licenses/Certifications | None |
Required Experience | Three (3) years of experience in academic research administration, grant writing, proposal writing, and/or project management. |
Preferred Experience | More than the required experience. Certified Research Administration (CRA) preferred. |
Equipment | Use of standard office equipment. |
Working Conditions | Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. |
