Job Description

The Grant Proposal Writing Manager will collaborate with members of the College of Engineering (COE), Virginia Tech, and external partners to support proposal writing from the identification of opportunities through to development and submission. This position is key to achieving the outcomes associated with the COE strategic planning priorities (https://eng.vt.edu/about/strategic-plan/strategic-priorities.html). Specifically, the successful candidate will support the development and submission of large, interdisciplinary grants and grants focused on graduate education in support of goals to grow and diversify revenue streams, offer world-class, affordable educational experience at scale, and expand the COE reputation nationally and internationally. Reporting to the Associate Deans for Research and Innovation and Graduate and Professional Studies, this individual will work with stakeholders to develop highly competitive, federal research grant proposals. This work includes preparation of proposal documents but also identifying funding opportunities, researching proposal requirements, coordinating and facilitating the work of proposal writing teams, and developing and offering training sessions to enhance proposal-writing capabilities across COE. The Grant Specialist will partner with stakeholders to research, prepare, submit, and manage a consistent, year-round pipeline of LOIs, proposals, presentations, briefings, and progress/impact reports to local, state, federal, individual, corporate, and foundation funding sources. This position requires strong writing and oral communication skills, critical thinking and analytic skills, and a high degree of competence and creativity. Must be able to work well managing multiple priorities and deadlines, strong organization skills and the ability to perform independently and as a team member.


Required Qualifications

Graduate degree in communications, marketing, science, engineering, English, or related field.
Experience with federal, corporate, or foundations grant writing within engineering or related fields.
Demonstrated record of partnering with stakeholders to produce successful federal, corporate and/or foundation awards.
Strong record of progressive experience in current communication fields, including demonstrated reporting, writing and editing skills.
Experience with applied research or technical assistance projects in a collaborative, interdisciplinary setting.
Possesses exemplary communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Tools, such as Office.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, function well under the pressure of deadlines, and manage multiple, diverse projects simultaneously.


Preferred Qualifications

Experience with web-based research and database software
Experience with federal, corporate, or foundations grant writing within graduate education
