Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is seeking two graduate student workers to contribute to the development of an open-access, open-education resource (OER) during the spring, summer, and fall 2024 semesters. We aim to develop a comprehensive, engaging online OER focusing on undergraduate research readiness. The selected candidates will collaborate closely with the OUR staff to curate, write, and edit content, develop interactive online modules, and actively participate in the launch and promotion of the OER within the UMD campus community and beyond in early Fall 2024. The development of the OER is funded by the Teaching and Learning Transformation Center’s Teaching Innovation Grant.
Responsibilities:

Curation of OER Content:

  • Review literature and undergraduate research forums to identify existing resources, scholarly articles, case studies, and other relevant materials related to undergraduate research readiness.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts, OUR faculty, OUR staff, and graduate student workers to gather insights and recommendations for valuable existing resources.
  • Author and edit content for the OER that aligns with learning objectives
  • Evaluate and recommend third-party resources or tools that can augment the interactive and dynamic nature of the OER.

Implementation of Content to Canvas Online System:
  • Add and organize content within the Canvas learning management system
  • Create or review engaging forms of content, including videos, recordings, voice-overs, or gamified lessons for use in the OER.
  • Conduct quality assurance checks to identify and rectify any technical issues or inconsistencies in the online content.
  • Work closely with the OUR staff to implement best practices in online course design, incorporating features that enhance user interactivity and participation.
  • Attend workshops, trainings, or seminars to develop skills in course design as needed.
  • Ensure alignment of the OER content with UMD Division of Technology accessibility standards, ensuring an accessible and inclusive learning experience for all users.

Assessment & Dissemination of OER:
  • Work with OUR staff to develop surveys and checkpoints within Canvas to gather user feedback for evaluation
  • Assist in writing an OER report summarizing key findings and recommendations
  • Attend relevant opportunities for scholarly dissemination of OER with OUR staff (e.g., 2024 TLTC Conference)
  • Contribute to promotional efforts within the UMD campus community and beyond
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Current graduate student at the University of Maryland College Park.


Experience:

  • Experience with course creation, design, and implementation using the Canvas learning management system.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in developing interactive online course tools and content.
  • Experience or interest in online course development, curriculum development, and high-impact practices such as undergraduate research.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, problem-solve, manage and meet timelines and deadlines, organize materials and information, and attend to details.

  • The position would require approximately 15 hours per week during spring, summer and fall 2024 semesters.
  • Selected candidates would work in-person with partial hybrid/remote to be considered.
  • The schedule of work will be flexible based on the selected candidate’s availability, but should primarily occur during regular business hours.
