Job Description:

Summary

The Department of Biomedical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is seeking qualified applicants for a Graduate Student Services Specialist II. This position works with the Department Chair and Director of Graduate Education (DOGE) to coordinate and expand all graduate program activities, develop new initiatives and implement major initiatives. Additionally, this position works with faculty from other departments and colleges.

This position will be primarily responsible for administering the Biomedical Sciences One-Year Non-Thesis MS Program. Further responsibilities will include administering the Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. and MS With Thesis Graduate Program, the Interdepartmental Toxicology Program and the Pharmacology/Toxicology Minor. Specific responsibilities include management and implementation of recruiting efforts for all programs, interaction with potential program applicants and processing their applications, facilitating current student success and monitoring student progress, development of advertising and marketing materials, and working with faculty and staff to ensure the growth of assigned programs.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership capabilities, excellent written and verbal communication, strong project management and team-development skills, the ability to make independent judgments the capacity to develop unique, functional and fiscally responsible solutions, and function in a changing and detailed environment. In addition, the candidate must possess the ability to multi-task under pressure, work well with others and be self-motivated. Regular travel to main campus to meet with students and DOGE will be required.


Example of Duties
• Counsels and advises prospective students on how to apply for graduate program admission.
• May participate in the selection process, including review and evaluation of candidates, interviews, and serves on selection committees making recommendations regarding final admission decisions.
• May meet with students on a variety of student issues and refer students to other resources as needed.
• May recruit potential graduate candidates.
Level Guidelines
• Intermediate-level position with solid professional and/or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals
• Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues
• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems
• Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests
• May provide training and/or direction to lower-level staff
• May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity.
• Provides guidance to students
