The Political Science Department is seeking a Graduate Program Assistant (GPA) for our highly regarded Ph.D. program. Our department is committed to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in our program and in our graduates who go on to successful careers in academia and other fields.

The GPA position is a full-time, 12-month position that supports the department’s yearly admission process to admit a class of about 10 students from a pool of 150+ applicants and provides administrative assistance to 60-80 continuing graduate students as they fulfill degree requirements.

The GPA reports to the department’s Director of Academic Services and works closely with faculty in leadership positions including the Chair, Associate Chair, Graduate Program Coordinator, and Director of Admissions as well as other departmental and university staff, especially the Graduate School. The GPA’s office is in a suite shared by the Director of Academic Services and two undergraduate advisers.

General Duties include comprehensive administrative support in the following areas:
Advise and counsel continuing Political Science graduate students about programs and policies leading to graduate degrees. Track degree progress including all required points of advancement. Annually prepare reports such as funding renewal, research proposal awards, paper competitions, student satisfactory progress and advancement, and graduation.

Advise prospective Political Science graduate students and track admission applications for the winter admissions process. Prepare reports for Admission Committee meetings. Assist faculty to develop and administer departmental funding resources, Graduate School funding sources, and merit based campus-wide competitions for graduate recruitment awards. Prepare correspondence with admitted applicants. Maintain the Political Science Profile and enter admission decisions information in the Graduate School's website.

Manage development and administration of program policy initiatives via work with the Graduate Program Coordinator and Graduate Program Committee, Graduate Admissions Chair and Graduate Admissions Committee, Placement Director, Department Chair, and Director of Academic Services.

Plan and supervise annual prospective student visits and the new student orientation. Participate on the department’s committee to plan and run our annual graduation celebration.

Liaison with campus offices including the Graduate School, Registration Office, etc., to interpret policies and procedures. Serve on departmental and campus committees as requested.

Manage multiple email accounts. Respond to messages in a timely manner.
