The Graduate Assistant will report to the Head Men’s Basketball Coach & Athletics Director.
The successful candidate will work a 10-month appointment for the 2024-2025 academic year with the opportunity for renewal of a second year at the discretion at the Athletics Director. The Graduate Assistant will receive a full scholarship that includes tuition, room and board, and an annual stipend of $8,000, paid monthly. This position will remain open until filled. The anticipated start date for the positions will be August 1, with the potential for a mutually agreed upon earlier start date and summer employment.
Essential Job Functions:
To be eligible, prospective candidates must be accepted into one of the Master’s or Doctoral programs at the University of the Virgin Islands. The Graduate Assistant will report directly to the Head Men’s Basketball Coach & Athletics Director and will gain experience assisting with all aspects of a NAIA men’s basketball program & UVI Wellness Center.
Key Job Responsibilities:
Coaching/Facility Duties Assist with all aspects of the men’s basketball program, including:
1. Planning and execution of practice
2. Player development
3. Opponent scouting
4. Film breakdown
5. Recruitment of student-athletes
6. Travel and operational logistics, including travel itineraries, travel meal planning, and uniform/equipment management
7. Organizing camps and clinics
8. Monitoring the academic progress of student-athletes
9. Consistently demonstrating a positive team player attitude, building and maintaining professional working relationships with all departmental staff, including but not limited to the athletics administration.
10. Represent the athletics department through collaboration with a variety of campus groups.
11. Represent the athletics department appropriately and intentionally through community involvement, speaking engagements, media responsibilities, etc.
12. Represent UVI as appropriate with the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) and the NAIA.
13. Assist in the daily operational duties of the Wellness Center.
14. Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Candidates must possess excellent written and verbal skills
  • The ability to exhibit professionalism, maintain confidentiality, and serve as a trusted mentor to UVI student-athletes
  • The ideal candidate will have experience as a student-athlete, manager, and/or coach in a college basketball program
