Position Summary

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student’s field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

Additional Details
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Your First Year (YFY), this position primarily supports SOAR and YFY communications and assists with all NST & FYE departmental programs and services as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):
Serve as the primary contact and support for YFY Communications
  • Manage YFY Instagram and other platforms currently used: Hootsuite, LinkTree, Canva, Constant Contact, Microsoft Suite, Design Pickle, etc.
  • Manage the NST & FYE Social Media Campaign request process and spreadsheet
  • Assist with university-wide social media campaigns, such as Rawkin Welcome Weeks, National Transfer Student Week, Homecoming, Believe in the G, and other initiatives as requested
  • Be knowledgeable about and conduct trainings on University Brand Guidelines for NST & FYE staff
  • Create graphics in conjunction with undergraduate Canva Creative Content Manager
  • First Year Connect Newsletter
    • Coordinate with campus partners to collect content
    • Copy and create visuals for monthly e-newsletter
    • Manage and update contact lists for newsletters
  • Spartan SPEARS program
    • Manage volunteer logistics and email communications
    • Conduct a virtual training session for volunteers
    • Reach out to campus partners and student organizations for volunteers
  • YFY Success Planner
    • Assist with writing and editing content

YFY Assistant Director and YFY Coordinator Support
  • Assist with YFY Success Series marketing campaigns
  • Provide day-of event support for the YFY Success Series including First Finals Fest, First Year Forum, etc.
  • Assist with YFY opt-in channel on UNCG Mobile
  • Participate in guidance of Creative Content Team

Additional New Student Transitions & First Year Experience Initiatives
  • SOAR related responsibilities
    • Coordinate YFY Zone communications and promotion during SOAR
    • Design SOAR Social Media campaigns
    • Manage the BEFORE YOU SOAR video series
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters following the UNCG Graduate Assistantship Schedule for a $12,000 stipend.
  • Preference given to candidates who are available for summer employment (May to July) as a temp/graduate student assistant supporting student transition programs. More information provided during the interview process.
  • Professional development funds may be available in support of departmental needs.
  • Due to the nature of orientation/transition programs, extensive evening and weekend hours during scheduled university breaks may be required. Individual accommodations for alternative schedules, flex time and/or time off will be negotiated with the direct supervisor.
  • Graduate Assistant employment is contingent upon available funding and resources.
Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
• Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
• Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
• Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
• Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
Additional Minimum Qualifications
  • Admission to a graduate program at UNC Greensboro is required. Preference is given to the following UNCG programs: Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education (HED) or Student Development in Higher Education (CED).
  • Quality written and oral communication skills required.
  • Strong eye for details in visuals and graphic design (graphic design background preferred but not required).
  • Marketing, communications, and/or social media experience is preferred.
