Job Description Summary
As part of the Wellness & Recreation team, the Graduate Assistant for Recreation Programming contributes to holistic wellness and the sense of campus community at Chapman. The position supervises a team that designs, develops, and implements on- and off-campus recreation programming, outdoor activities and classes, and tournaments. The Graduate Assistant is a member of the Department of Student Engagement and the Division of Student Affairs.
Responsibilities
  • Fitness and Recreation Programming
  • Take ownership by designing, developing, marketing, and implementing campus-wide, fitness, wellness and recreation programs throughout the academic year congruent with and/or in consideration of trends and needs related to college student health and wellness while ensuring safety, service, inclusiveness, and collaboration with a student emphasis.
  • Programs include sports tournaments, NIRSA Rec Day, off-campus trips (hikes, ski trip, kayaking), Chapman Fitness Challenge, and much more
  • Coordinate special events related to the Henley Fitness Center and group exercise sessions
  • In conjunction with supervisor, the graduate assistant will develop collaborative relationships with off-campus partners and on-campus partners including Institutional Event Management, Facility Management, Media Services, Sodexo, Risk Management, faculty, Residence Life and First Year Experience, Career Development Center, University Program Board, Student Disability Services, Student Psychological Counseling Services, Fish Interfaith Center, Promising Futures and other campus partners to support student-oriented programming goals and manage daily facility operations
  • Facility Services
  • Coordinate and oversee facility resources and services for students, including camping gear checkout, towel service and sports equipment checkout
  • Supervision & Facility Operations
  • Along with the Facility Manager, supervise and manage student staff who oversee the Julianne Argyros Fitness Center and Henley Fitness Center.
  • Meet 1-1 with assigned Leads weekly
  • Work alongside professional staff to supervise entry level employees, including hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, team development, performance evaluation and accountability.
  • Serve as “manager on duty” of campus facilities when working on-campus
  • Provide on-site supervision of daily operations
  • Along with Associate Director, manage facility maintenance, inventory, and safety checks
  • Troubleshoot and manage Fitness-On-Demand, A/V system and Fusion
  • Ensure that student employees provide excellent, proactive customer service to all guests including accurate information to telephone and in-person questions regarding Chapman University and our facilities.
  • Utilize Rec Portal management system to check in guests, coordinate programs, and monitor facility access
  • Complete regular “active laps” as assigned to clean, monitor and address safety problems, complete repairs, and provide visual security of the facilities and their furnishings/equipment
  • Provide assistance with management of Doti-Struppa Rock Wall, Argyros Forum Student Union and Cross-Cultural Center when needed.
  • Work early morning, late night, and weekend shifts on an ongoing basis

  • Meet weekly with Facility Manager of Student Engagement
  • Coordinate assessment and evaluation of operations and all programs/experiences, services, and resources related to Fitness Center facilities.
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Enrollment in a Ph.D. or Master’s degree program, preferably focused on leadership development or higher education and student affairs
  • Desire to gain knowledge of student development theory and issues relevant to higher education.
  • Ability/willingness to work some nights/weekends.
  • Commitment to teamwork, customer service, collaboration, and providing service to students. Ability to exercise initiative and work independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills working with a diverse group of individuals at all organizational levels, both inside and outside the University. Ability to use tact and diplomacy and to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Good time management skills and the ability to prioritize duties when faced with interruptions, distractions, and fluctuating workload. Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Professional and confident demeanor when delegating and holding others accountable.
  • Ability to work with budgets, including the oversight and reconciliation of expenses.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills; strong editing and proofreading skills.
Desired Qualifications
Desired Qualifications:
  • Previous experience, at the graduate or undergraduate level, working directly with fitness and/or recreation programs preferred.
  • Previous experience, at the graduate or undergraduate level, working directly with union and/or fitness facilities.
  • Knowledge of effective health and wellness strategies preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel preferred.
Special Instructions to Applicants
