Position Summary
The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student’s field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

The Academic Achievement Center creates diverse, innovative, and student-centered learning opportunities and personalized academic support that encourage all students to define and find success at UNCG and beyond. Through active collaboration with students, faculty, and staff, the AAC recognizes and builds upon students’ strengths to cultivate learner confidence and academic self-efficacy.
Complementing the efforts of the teaching faculty, students are served through a personalized and structured approach that includes tutoring, Academic Success Peer Coaching, and Outreach Workshops on Learning Skills (OWLS). The Academic Achievement Center partners with faculty, staff, and administrators in upholding the mission, standards, and requirements of the University.

Position:
The AAC includes professional staff, graduate assistants, and undergraduate students who work collaboratively to accomplish division and office goals. In this position, the Graduate Assistant will be co-supervised by Erin Cassidy and the assistant director for outreach and partnerships.
The Outreach and Skills GA will assist with campus outreach, social media, workshops, and events. This involves presenting Outreach Workshops on Learning Skills (OWLS), creating Instagram content using Canva and other software, and representing the AAC at a variety of campus events. The Outreach and Skills GA will also assist with the facilitation of training for the academic success peer coaches and maintenance of the peer coaching program. This includes assisting with the development of training materials, leading in-service trainings, and occasionally coaching students on academic skills. Paid training is provided.
Graduate Assistant Responsibilities:
  • Develop an understanding of and competency in various academic skills. Paid training is provided.
  • Assist with development and presentation of Outreach Workshops on Learning Skills (OWLS)
  • Create social media content for Instagram and other platforms
  • Assist with programming to encourage, inform, and engage students; represent the AAC at events such as SOAR, YFY Success Series, etc.
  • Plan and lead weekly in-service trainings for academic success peer coaches with the guidance of supervisors
  • Research and design new training materials and handouts for the coaching program
  • General office and administrative work including:
    • Sitting at front reception desk as needed to assist students and campus partners
    • Assisting students with appointment scheduling in TracCloud
    • Responding to questions on the AAC Chat Box
    • Responding to questions on the AAC email account
  • Meet weekly with supervisors to discuss projects and updates
  • Other duties as assigned

Time Commitment:
20 hours/week during office hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.) for the 2024-2025 academic year (August 12th – May 9th). Specific hours will be determined in cooperation with the position’s supervisors based on office needs. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
Compensation:
Students are compensated $15,000 for the academic year; the Academic Achievement Center does not provide tuition waivers.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Basic understanding of computers, Canva, social media platforms, and Microsoft Office is necessary. Additional training will be provided.

  • Ability to interact with faculty, staff, undergraduate, and graduate students in a professional and personable manner
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Comfort with large- and small-group presentation development and public speaking
  • Flexibility and ability to work independently in a fast-paced and ever-changing higher education environment
  • Strong decision-making skills and comfort with translating knowledge and experience to new situations is strongly desired
  • Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner and effectively communicate needs with supervisors

Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
• Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
• Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
• Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
• Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
