Position Summary

The FYRE graduate assistant will work closely to provide programming and weekly advising for 15 first-year students of color in the College of Science and Health. The GA will help to plan two week-long residential programs to introduce students to majors, careers, and research opportunities in STEM fields, while also providing holistic advising and support throughout the academic year. Historically underrepresented students of color are encouraged to apply.

Duties include:
• Prepare & implement two rigorous academic one-week residential program for 15 first year students
• Supervise upper class FYRE peer mentors
• Conduct bi-weekly one-on-one advising meetings with FYRE participants
• Schedule research exploration activities, at least twice monthly
• Maintain communication with students and the campus community
• Keep accurate attendance and budgetary records for all activities

Required Qualifications

• Must be accepted to a University of Wisconsin-La Crosse graduate program.
• Must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA throughout graduate assistantship.
• Must demonstrate interest in furthering the mission of the program.
• Demonstrated time management skills.
• Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Flexibility & independent problem solving;
• Supervisory experience;
• Experience with program-eligible populations;
STEM undergraduate degree and/or undergraduate research experience.

Physical Demands
Working conditions and environment

Occasional evening and weekend work required, local travel to indoor and outdoor research sites.
