Job Summary
The Roy research lab at the Moran Eye Center at University of Utah (https://www.royvisionlab.com ) is looking for a motivated and talented graduate student to work on project(s) aimed at studying mechanisms of visual signaling by retinal neurons, in normal and diseased states. The position will be filled by a candidate admitted to one of the graduate programs at University of Utah outlined below. The candidate will gain experience in advanced techniques in retinal research: ex vivo electrophysiology, dissection skills, data analysis, computational modeling, and animal handling and surgery. There will be opportunities to work on collaborative projects with other labs.
Successful applicant will have excellent scientific, problem-solving, organizational, and writing skills.
Responsibilities
  • Learn techniques in retinal electrophysiology (multielectrode array) and/or fluorescence imaging and/or immunohistochemistry and/or animal surgery and/or analysis of large-scale data.
  • Design and conduct experiments, collect data, and analyze data, under the guidance of Principal Investigator.
  • Coordinate with members of the lab (graduate students, postdocs, lab technicians), and members of other labs in collaborative projects.
  • Attend lab meetings and generate progress reports on projects.
  • Present research findings at conferences and workshops.
  • Drafting manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, under the guidance of Principal Investigator. 
  • Write proposals for grants, under the guidance of Principal Investigator. 
  • Perform routine lab tasks as needed. 
Minimum Qualifications
Must be admitted to one of the following graduate programs at University of Utah:
  • Neuroscience
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Neurobiology
  • Molecular biology 
  • Cell biology
  • Pharmacology and toxicology
  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Must be in good academic standing. 
  • Good communication skills – verbal and written.
