Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Graduate Assistant Academic Advisor within Engineering Academic Services will provide general academic advising to prospective transfer students and currently enrolled undergraduate students in the A. James Clark School of Engineering. The position will provide support to the EAS staff broadly as well as the Program Director for Transfer Initiatives specifically. Responsibilities will be split between undergraduate advising and transfer student advising respectively.
For undergraduate advising, the Graduate Assistant specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, front desk triage, monitoring students’ academic progress, referring students to appropriate university and engineering resources, supporting advising staff and administration, communicating with students and parents via phone and email, and assisting with new student orientations for freshmen and transfer students. In addition, this person will assist with administrative paperwork, such as change of major process, monitoring electronic files, graduation clearance reviews, and degree audits. The Graduate Assistant will also serve as a liaison between engineering departments and other campus offices as well as attend regularly scheduled EAS staff meetings.
The Graduate Assistant will also support the Program Director for Transfer Initiatives. Specific responsibilities pertaining to transfer student advising include, but are not limited to, program coordination of transfer student events such as the ClarkLEAD Transfer Welcome and the Maryland Engineering Transfer Alliance Conference, responding to student email inquiries, and other new initiatives as assigned.
The Graduate Assistant position will be a 12-month appointment and the GA will have a 20-hours per week commitment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Current enrollment as a full-time student in a University of Maryland (College Park) graduate program is required. Graduate students in any major or college are eligible to apply. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. 
  • Demonstrate good communication skills (written and oral) and be detail oriented.
