Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Guides students in planning a personalized course of study based on their academic and career objectives.
  • Explains degree requirements and school and campus policies.
  • Advises on academic and curriculum requirements, probation and dismissal, career planning, graduation eligibility, progression requirement, and other related topics. 
  • Supports recruitment and retention initiatives, reviews student files for coursework, referrals, and other special programming.
  • Advises and supports international graduate students.
  • Conducts orientation for new students. 
  • Provide academic advising to prospective students and currently enrolled students for graduate students in the Department of Computer Science. 
  • Addresses inquiries and solve problems received via phone, email, walk-in, and appointment. 
  • Advises on plans of study, degree requirements, course selection, academic standing, rights and responsibilities, probation and dismissal, career planning, graduation eligibility, and other related topics. 
  • Provides support to students with concerns and refer to appropriate services on campus and in the community. 
  • Audits and grants curriculum exemptions, substitutions, and exceptions. 
  • Reviews student academic records regularly. 
  • Approves OPT and CPT approvals. 
  • Oversees accelerated programs in department including information sessions, application processing, and advising.  
  • Collects feedback from students on the experience of courses, curricula, and programs and make suggestions for improvement to the program. 
  • Provides advice and data to the faculty on course and degree development and revision. 
  • Participates and provides input in developing policies and procedures related to student activities such as curriculum, orientation, enrollment procedures, and others.  
  • Assists in coordinating internship and practicum with program and career staff. 
  • Collaborates, designs, and administers workshops for orientation procedures, career planning, international student services, community building, and other types of student programming that may be needed to support students. 
  • Works collaboratively with Luddy faculty and the IU Indianapolis Graduate School, maintains audit forms, and monitors progression materials for PhD students in the department.  
  • Serves on various committees as requested. 
  • Represents the school at local, state, and national meetings or conferences as requested. 
  • Manages student workers and other duties as assigned.

General Responsibilities

  • Provides academic counseling for students pursuing or considering majors, minors, or certificates. Guides students in planning their course of study in concert with the departments' curricular requirements; explains curriculum requirements and school and campus policies.
  • Meets with students in groups and one-on-one to guide students in academic programs that will meet their educational needs and the requirements of their chosen major, minor, and/or certificate.
  • Assists students in making informed decisions about a choice of major and potential career or graduate school direction; helps students to assess their interests, values, and academic skills and to understand these in relation to major choice and potential future career/graduate school options.
  • Teaches students how to navigate university systems, academic processes, and policies; empowers student accountability in academic decisions about courses, career direction, and long-term plans; and provides guidance on avenues for increased involvement as an IU student and in the IU community.
  • Refers students to appropriate campus resources, such as academic support resources, placement programs, internship and overseas study opportunities, etc.
  • Tracks and monitors students' academic progress, reviews and maintains confidential student records to ensure that students meet requirements and to document advising discussions, and communicates this information in a timely manner to students and to appropriate academic offices when necessary.
  • Represents the advising function as a presenter at campus meetings and recruiting functions; assists in developing written advising materials for use in student events.
  • Researches, recommends, or creates best practices for unit or campus initiatives, projects, processes, or programs and may provide guidance to other Academic Advisors.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Master's degree in related field. 

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or related field. 

Preferred

  • 3 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or related field.
  • Experience in a student-focused, higher education environment is highly desired.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between 1 day remote and 4 days in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
