The University of California’s only school of international affairs, the School of Global Policy & Strategy (GPS) provides a unique resource for training leaders, generating ideas, and building networks for the Pacific Century. GPS is internationally renowned for its innovative programs, superb faculty and outstanding students and now stands among the world's top graduate schools of international relations and is the established leader in its focus on Asia and the Americas. The International Studies Program, a fast-growing interdisciplinary program under the advisory umbrella of GPS, has over 1400 declared undergraduate majors and offers a rigorous curriculum for undergraduate students interested in international affairs. Offering nine B.A. disciplinary major tracks, as well as, three in association of GPS leading to a BA/MIA, and a minor program, the International Studies Program explores the international, national and local processes that have, over time, shaped globalization. ISP does significant programming in partnership with GPS. GPS is also the parent organization to major research centers: Center on Global Transformation (CGT), Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, 21st Century China Center, Fudan-UC Center on China, Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC), Policy Design and Evaluation Lab (PDEL), Laboratory on International Law and Regulation (ILAR), and Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology (JFIT).

Under the general supervision of the GPS Director of Academic Degree Programs, the incumbent in this position independently counsels and advises students, faculty, staff, and Colleges on academic policies pertaining to the International Studies Program. Reviews, analyzes and evaluates degree audits, course approximations, and petitions. Interprets degree requirements and recommends courses of action for curriculum planning according to projected graduation date. Represents ISP in matters related to undergraduate programming and advising with campus entities, including but not limited to departments, colleges, central administration, and education abroad. Works with affiliated campus departments on ISP curriculum and course offerings. Participates in outreach to community colleges and high schools, and orientation programming for transfer and new freshmen students. Has primary responsibility for working with the campus departments affiliated with the BA-MA joint programs, advising undergraduates before and through the completion of their application, works with GPS staff on workshops associated with the programs. Assists with the quarterly ISA build of class schedules for ISP and GPS. Has responsibility for the communication with students via social media and ISP website. Other duties as assigned within scope of description.

  • Occasional overtime may be required including evenings and /or weekend, as workload demands.
  • Demonstrated experience with undergraduate and graduate student advising on degree requirements, as well as assessing particular resource needs for students who are at-risk, have ADA accommodations, are in academic difficulty, or face opportunity gaps.

  • Bachelor's in counseling, education psychology, and 5 years or more of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience related to academic advising, program planning, implementation, program outreach, and/or assessment efforts. Knowledge of educational theories and principles and experience in the practical application of counseling techniques.

  • Experience in social media content creation and the use of Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and bulk email applications such as Emma preferred.

  • Experience in working with faculty, helping them with Canvas and other course support needs preferred.

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge in curriculum administration to advise students on University/department program offerings, policies and procedures, and curricular requirements.

  • Ability to utilize independent decision-making skills. Demonstrated effective problem-solving skills; ability to identify, research, and analyze complex situations, recommend solutions and determine actions to be taken to affect resolutions. Excellent leadership skills and ability to work with minimal direction and negotiate conflicts.

  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal. Skill at composition, editing, and proofreading. Ability to convey details with clarity and conciseness.

  • Demonstrated ability in development, implementation, and management of academic and student programs.

  • Demonstrated ability to direct student employees and/or staff, including in giving clear instructions, explaining the delegation and assignment of tasks, monitoring production and quality of work, setting performance standards, and assessing output.

  • Skills and knowledge to identify, gather, and analyze information, including intermediate in Excel and the use of data display tools.

  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases including for quarterly scheduling, data retrieval, student advising and reimbursements.

  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Understanding of University rules and regulations. Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

  • Knowledge of University processes and procedures.

  • Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking.

  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning.

  • Ability to multi-task; verbal and written communication skills.

  • Master's degree in relevant field preferred.

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $52,100 - $87,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.95 - $42.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
