The Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver is an interdisciplinary professional school of international studies that prepares students for careers in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Our program provides students with the knowledge, skills and networks to design policies, implement programs, and realize outcomes that enhance human capabilities around the world.

The Sié Center is a center of excellence within the Josef Korbel School that leads research, education and policy programs focused on the links between global security, prosperity, and social justice. Nineteen faculty, visiting and post-doctoral scholars, and over 30 Korbel M.A. and PhD students contribute to the center’s activities.

The Inclusive Global Leadership Initiative (IGLI) encourages engagement between researchers and activists on how to most effectively wage and support movements for social change. IGLI initiates research, education and programming aimed at elevating and amplifying the work that women-identified activists are doing at the grassroots to promote peace, justice and human rights around the world. IGLI embraces a commitment to nonviolence and feminist principles of leadership.

Position Summary

The Sié Chéou-Kang Center for International Security and Diplomacy at the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies is seeking qualified candidates for a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in Global Justice. The Global Justice postdoctoral fellow will support the Inclusive Global Leadership Initiative (IGLI) at the Korbel School by teaching one graduate course per year in the new Global Justice certificate program. This scholar will be in residence at the University of Denver for two full academic years, under the mentorship and supervision of Professor Marie Berry.

In addition to teaching 2 courses (total) during their tenure, the Global Justice postdoc will also be invited to engage with other Sié Center and IGLI initiatives including conferences, commentary, and publications. They will also be invited to present their work in the weekly Korbel Research Seminar, where scholars present work-in-progress to PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, and other members of the Korbel Community. Further, they will benefit from the support and collegiality of the large Korbel faculty whose feedback and advice will help them shape their own research and advance their career goals.

We will accept applications from candidates who have demonstrated excellence in research and teaching on global justice, broadly conceived.

The Fellowship will begin September 1, 2023. The fellowship will extend for a two-year term, with the individual’s time spent in residence at the Sié Center at the University of Denver.

Essential Functions

  • Teach up to 2 classes in the new Social Justice Certificate.
  • Participate in biweekly meetings with faculty mentor.
  • Actively participate in the weekly Korbel Research Seminar.
  • Present at the Korbel Research Seminar at least once over the course of two years.
  • Conduct independent and collaborative research.
  • Collaborate with Sié Center faculty on additional research projects as consistent with their interests and expertise.
  • Participate in events and workshops hosted by the Sié Center.

Required Qualifications

  • Substantial progress toward a PhD in Sociology, Anthropology, Geography, Political Science, International Studies, or other relevant discipline.
  • Applicants should complete all requirements for their PhD by August 1, 2023.
  • Demonstrated excellence in research and/or teaching on social justice, broadly conceived.

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.
  • Physical Activities

  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.
  • Work Schedule

    Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Work hours may vary.

    Salary Grade Number:

    The salary grade for the position is 8.

    Salary Range:

    The salary range for this position is $50,000 - $60,000.
