The department of Biology is a large, unified department with strong undergraduate degrees, nationally-ranked graduate programs, and world-class research spanning the breadth of biological questions and experimental systems, from ecosystems to microbiology and developmental biology, from evolution to cell biology, from molecular biology to systems biology, bioinformatics, and genomics. The Department of Biology is part of The College of Arts + Sciences, the oldest and largest academic division of Indiana University.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, cleans specialized glassware, such as test tubes and Petri dishes, then delivers to designated areas. 
  • Collects and sterilizes contaminated/dirty glassware from Bloomington Drosophila Stock Center (BDSC) drop off sites. Loads, operates and unloads dishwasher and drying machines. May wash some glassware by hand. Inspects for defects and watermarks prior to delivering back to designated areas. 
  • Uses autoclave to clean drosophila vials and remove rayon. Rinses and soaks vials in preparation for loading into glassware washers. 
  • Cleans work areas: mops and cleans floors: maintains washing/drying equipment in clean and sanitary condition. Refers major problems to supervisor. 
  • Maintains awareness of supply inventory and informs supervisor when supplies are low. Records materials used and labor required for washing specialized glassware.  

General Responsibilities

  • Collects contaminated/dirty glassware and autoclaves to destroy bacteria. Loads, operates, and unloads dishwasher and drying machines. May wash some glassware by hand. Inspects for defects and watermarks prior to delivering back to designated areas.
  • Cleans work areas; mops and cleans floors; maintains washing/drying equipment in clean and sanitary condition; performs routine and preventative maintenance on dish washing machinery; disassembles, cleans, adjusts and reassembles equipment; refers major problems to mechanic.
  • Maintains awareness of supply levels and informs supervisor when supplies are low. Records materials used and labor required for washing specialized glassware.

EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

SKILLS

Required

  • Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner
  • Ability to interpret and follow simple oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work in team environment as an effective team player
  • Knowledge of basic sanitation methods and standard kitchen practices
  • Knowledge and ability to operate and maintain the specific tools and machinery used in the area of expertise\
  • Ability to perform work requiring considerable standing and medium-heavy lifting under hot, damp-working conditions
  • Ability to successfully complete I.U. EH&S Safety Training

This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
