The South Dakota State University (SDSU) Planning Department is currently recruiting for a GIS Technician with an emphasis on utility records, locates, and basic understanding of GIS mapping. Preferred experience includes applying GIS and database technology to produce in-depth analysis, advanced mapping, and graphic representation of metadata. This position offers an opportunity to learn and grow as an entry-level position into the GIS career path.
 
Job Responsibilities:  The GIS Technician is responsible for coordinating utility locates, permitting for installations of underground utilities, permitting for excavation activities, and coordinating with maintenance staff to capture, document, and graphically represent campus utilities. The GIS Technician may also be required to manage small utility projects.
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 
Knowledge of:  
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, and asset management software
  • Mapping and cartographic principles 
  • Database design and applications (Access applications and familiarity with SQL databases)
  • Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)

 
Skill & Ability to
  • Gather, compile and present information in a cartographic and tabular format
  • Develop and implement GIS projects
  • Perform GIS analysis
  • Comply with safety requirements of the position and actively promote safe work practices
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, management, and university administration
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills

 
Required License:  Valid driver’s license. 
 
Comments:  Experience writing macros, design and manage databases, construct queries to support central programming, access information, and produce analytical mapping graphics a plus. Position is classified as Building Engineer Assistant. South Dakota State University is a tobacco free environment. The SDSU Planning Department guides the physical development of the campus by planning maintenance, infrastructure, and capital improvement projects.
