Position Title GIS Analyst
Position Summary
The GIS Analyst, reporting to the Assistant Research Scientist, develops procedures and products necessary for completion of projects assigned. 
 
Specific responsibilities include, but not limited to: 
 
  • Conducts GIS analysis to support research on coastal systems. Participates in the development of digital data and map products utilizing GIS software. 
  • Conducts testing and applying different geoprocessing tools for data creation, mapping, and spatial analysis. Modifies existing GIS tools/models in support of departmental projects. Provides data for the preparation of proposals and reports for GIS-based projects. 
  • Assists in web visualization of GIS products. (Shares content online, such as spatial datasets, layers, and maps using applications such as ArcGIS online and ArcGIS Explorer) .

  • Trains and provides guidance to technicians, interns, students and part-time employees working with GIS programs within the department. 
  • Assists in field work in support of departmental projects as necessary. Manage, operate and maintain computers and other hardware involved in GIS projects.
Required Qualifications
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in information science or a related field or the equivalent combination of education, training and or directly related experience in GIS and remote sensing applications.
COMPETENCIES:
  • Strong knowledge and skills with GIS software programs and applications (particularly ESRI products).
  • Demonstrated skills and abilities to work with multiple GIS software programs on various hardware platforms.
  • Knowledge of programming principles with the ability to modify existing programs.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work as a cohesive team member, as well as an individual contributor.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Substantive experience with GIS software programs and applications (particularly ESRI products).
  • Demonstrated experience with multiple GIS software programs on multiple hardware platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
COMPETENCIES/EXPERIENCE:
  • Strong report writing skills for GIS based projects.
  • Strong mentoring and training skills with the ability to instruct staff and students working with GIS equipment and programs.
  • Experience modifying existing GIS tools / models.
  • Experience with web visualization of GIS products.
