Brief Position Overview
Under supervision of the GIS/BIM Lead Technician, the person in this position is responsible for responding to map and document requests that impact campus property and utilities; creating, maintaining, and providing up-to-date and accurate graphic and text-based information on MSU’s campus infrastructure including electrical, water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, irrigation, steam, natural gas, telephone, lighting, communications, landscape and hardscape; and creating and editing building floor plans as required including developing Building Information Management systems.
The person in this position will be responsible for coordinating with the GIS/BIM Lead Technician to support the management, creation and preservation of all GIS, BIM and REVIT/CAD-generated documents for Campus Planning, Design and Construction as well as University Services departments. This includes a diverse inventory of project record documents, building floor plans, aerial and topographic maps, CIP and major maintenance data sets, standard GIS, BIM and REVIT/CAD practices and procedures, utility and engineering maps, event seating layouts, and other geo-reference and graphic-related information important to effectively communicating to the campus.

General Statement
Campus Planning, Design and Construction provides leadership and systematic guidance to preserve and advance the physical environment of MSU in support of education, research and community outreach. The purpose of this position is support the data management systems of MSU including BIM, GIS, AiM, FM:Systems, Energy Cap and others as prescribed as well as to support the goals of the department and to the campus as related to buildings, campus grounds and infrastructure. MSU understands individuals may possess demonstrated competency in only one software application (GIS, REVIT, BIM) but individuals should be willing to learn others with training provided by the University.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Respond to map requests from the campus community.
  • Receive, review, interpret, translate and process utilities, surface feature information and building attributes provided by architectural and engineering consultants and transferring the information into relevant databases.
  • Create and manage a comprehensive Capital Projects Database, which includes capital construction projects, building inventory and data.
  • Verify planning data through physical inspection of facilities, including team participation on Facilities Condition Inventory.
  • Update and maintain Physical Plant policies, procedures, web reports and data access and coordination with the Building Supervisors.
  • Integrate map-related content into web maps, including related databases.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Accredited GIS, BIM or REVIT/CAD program degree certificate by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) including GIS management, drafting/engineering REVIT technology, AutoCAD operator, or other closely related field and/or progressively responsible experience with using ArcGIS or REVIT/AutoCAD (latest upgrades), or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience within the areas of architecture, engineering, or planning focusing on the creation and upkeep of GIS, BIM or REVIT applications.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of multiple professional disciplines of the construction and design industry, including architecture, utilities, mapping, planning, and engineering.
  • Demonstrated competence reading and interpreting architectural, engineering and utility plans, shop drawings, databases and specifications.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with records management and archiving practices for hard copy and electronic media.
  • Demonstrated experience with plotters, printers, and other graphic production devices.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
    • Bachelor’s degree in geography, engineering, planning, or architecture with an emphasis toward GIS or BIM applications.
    • One year or more full-time GIS or BIM system management experience.
    • Previous experience being responsible for the upkeep and generation of GIS, BIM, REVIT and CAD documents for a company or campus that has multiple buildings, extensive utilities, capital projects, major maintenance plans and space management systems.
    • Demonstrated familiarity with the theories, principles, and practices of multiple architectural, planning and engineering disciplines, mapping and evolving technologies related to GIS/BIM/REVIT.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
    Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points). Do NOT send a copy of the driver’s license.

    Physical Demands
    • This position requires an individual to be able to work in a variety of environments, including temperature extremes and inclement weather, around noise, dust and dirt.
    • Must be able to operate vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner in all types of weather conditions and drive to job sites with entering and existing a vehicle multiple times daily.
    • Must be able to traverse up to 3 miles over uneven terrain while carrying gear.
    • Must be able to transport up to 80 pounds and be in a stationary position for extended periods.
    • Possible field verification of existing physical conditions that requires moving, ascending/descending, and/or positioning self to access a wide diversity of sites and space with potential exposure to a variety of chemical, biological, and physical hazards.
