Description

Position Summary

Middlebury College’s Summer German School (a university-level summer program) is hiring for a German-speaking theater director (m/f/d) during the summer 2024 session (June 26th–August 16th), on Middlebury’s main campus in Vermont. Designated as an AATG German Center of Excellence in 2013, Middlebury’s German School and its unique 7-week program combine a cultural immersion environment with rigorous daily classroom instruction. This is an opportunity to join a community of learners by actively contributing to the German School’s mission and cultural offerings and students as they pledge to read, write, and speak exclusively in German. Please note that this position is for summer 2024 only!

In addition to the salary, lodging and a complete meal plan will be provided. Insurance is available.

Position Description

We are looking for a young and dynamic theater director from the German-speaking countries to direct/ lead our annual co-curricular theater project. This project should allow non-native amateur actors (who may or may not have experience on the stage) to fully participate in the production and performance of a play in German (no translated plays) and contribute to the overall mission and life of Middlebury’s German School by bringing some of the German countries’ theater culture to our campus while adhering to our ethos of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. The project runs over the course of our summer session with a public performance at the end of our time together. Limited support (set building/ props, costumes) is available, but this is a low-budget project within our academic overall framework.—We expect our colleague to be fully immersed in the School’s life—live on campus, dine with the School and participate in other co-curricular and cultural events. We especially invite young directors from diverse backgrounds to apply.

Requirements

Qualifications

At least three years of experience in directing for the (professional) stage, formal training in directing preferred. Experience with diverse groups of amateur actors, experience with non-native speakers of all proficiency levels a plus. Basic English proficiency required, but all work in summer will be conducted in German.

Application Instructions

All applications need to be submitted via the platform/ website Workable by February 5th 2023!

Interested candidates should upload a letter of interest, a project proposal, a current CV, and names of two references who can speak to their qualifications and work on the theater stage. Links to video recordings of recent work encouraged.
