Summary

The University of Michigan Facilities and Operations Information Services Department is seeking a GIS Technician Associate to join the Facilities and Operations Information Services team to create, update, maintain and analyze various datasets using ESRI ArcGIS Pro, FME, and other software programs.

Responsibilities*
  • Compile geographic data and attributes from a variety of sources including blueprints, field observation, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps
  • Create maps, utility networks, and web services using GIS software and related equipment
  • Gather, analyze, and integrate spatial data from staff and determine how best the information can be displayed using GIS
  • Meet with users to define data needs, project requirements, required outputs, or to develop applications
  • Analyze spatial data for geographic statistics to incorporate into documents and reports
  • Design and update database, applying additional knowledge of spatial feature presentations
  • Enter new map data through the use of a digitizer or by direct input of coordinate information using the principles of cartography including coordinate systems, longitude, latitude, elevation, topography, and map scales
  • Analyze geographic relationships among varying types of data
  • Prepare metadata and other documentation
  • Move, copy, delete, and add files, drawings, and maps to output reports in hard copy or electronic transfer
  • Present information to users and answer questions
  • Retrieve and print stored maps
  • Conduct research to locate and obtain existing data
  • Maintain and comply with established internal controls

This position may work with and/or support systems that maintain or process sensitive institutional data as defined by university policy. Successful candidates must comply with federal, state, and local law, and/or university policies or agreements that require the university to implement specific privacy and security safeguards, including but not limited to ITAR, EAR, HIPAA, and FISMA


Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, geography, natural resources, computer science or related field OR Bachelor's degree in a non-related field with professional experience working with GIS
  • Experience with GIS software and applications
  • Working knowledge of basic mapping and cartographic/GIS concepts, database design principles, and customer service principles
  • Ability to prioritize and organize, work well under stress, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to change
  • Strong interpersonal skills to assist and communicate with staff
  • Must be able to perform field work, including ascending/descending stairs, ladders, and rough terrain

Desired Qualifications*
  • Minimum one (1) year of professional experience with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online/Portal, and ESRI mobile applications
  • High degree of computer literacy; strong proficiency in MS Windows and Google applications
  • Experience with ESRI Utility Networks and/or Geometric Networks
  • Familiarity with Experience Builder, ArcGIS Indoors, and ArcScene
  • Working knowledge of Tasks, Arcade, and ArcGIS Notebooks
  • Minimum one (1) year of professional experience working with FME and python in a GIS environment
  • Familiarity with databases for storing data, running queries, and creating reports
  • Working knowledge of utility systems and experience mapping them
  • Working knowledge of mathematical concepts, research methods, and basic graphic arts principles

Work Locations

It is the expectation that you will locate to a reasonable commuting distance from the Ann Arbor campus. Hybrid work agreements with a two day onsite requirement are an option, with regular occasions where you will need to report to an office in Ann Arbor; including meetings, training, computer or technology requirements, and to complete work that is not possible to handle remotely.  Work agreement options are dependent upon and subject to current university policy (and are subject to potential changes).  Travel to multiple locations on and off campus may also be required on occasion.

Starting salary range is $52,000-$65,000. Starting base salary will vary depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
