Land, Building, and Real Estate is seeking a candidate to fulfill a GIS position to provide support to IT-Applications team. The position will be responsible for developing and supporting mapping applications and conducting spatial analysis tasks to support the operational core of Stanford University's campus. This position provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with GIS software and build essential professional skills in a business environment.

What will I do as a GIS Specialist:

  • You will have the opportunity to travel around campus [bike, golf cart, electric scooters] to view what the maps represent.
  • You will assist in developing the maps that everyone sees [staff, faculty, visitors].
  • You will take data and digitize it into map information.
  • You will transfer hardcopy data into our enterprise geodatabase.
  • You will interact with multiple departments and build relationships.
  • As you discover new solutions to problems you will be able to share that knowledge with others by documenting it in our wiki and customer facing website.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Some responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Create maps, charts, tables, graphs and graphics using GIS and related software. Identify attributes to be associated with mapped features and link to features as data are collected, surveyed or drafted.
  • Develop and maintain geospatial databases. Conduct research to locate and obtain existing databases. Correct data to ensure highest degree of accuracy.
  • Compile geographic data from a variety of sources including censuses, field observations, GPS, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps.
  • Analyze and integrate spatial data for geographic statistics to incorporate into documents and reports.
  • Identify and display geographic relationships among varying types of data.
  • Enter new map data through use of a digitizer or by direct input of coordinate information using various cartographic methods.
  • Work with clients to identify data needs.
  • Move, copy, delete and add files, drawings, and maps to output reports in hard copy or for electronic transfer.
  • Assess user needs and requirements.
  • Design and develop mapping applications that may involve sophisticated GIS data manipulation.
  • Maintain and update existing GIS applications.
  • Troubleshoot and solve technical problems.
  • Create GIS Applications to meet reporting and analysis needs.
  • Design and implement user and operations training programs.
  • Document changes in software for end users.
  • Follow team software development methodology.
  • Serve as technical resource with respect to GIS applications.

Requirements:

  • Background in information technology, programming, full stack exposure would be ideal.
  • Ability to quickly gain proficiency in new technologies.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • A strong interest and background in GIS (geographic information systems) and location services.
  • Organized, with an ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments.
  • Creative, Curious and Flexible.

Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of ESRI GIS Software; ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, Geodatabase.
  • Working knowledge of graphic image editing software; (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Basic understanding of industry standard scripting languages.
  • Understanding of topologic types and relationships and database design elements.
  • Able to coordinate and execute simple design projects.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience reading and interpreting maps, engineering and architectural drawings.
  • Possess cartographic aptitude with ability to complete basic mathematical and statistical calculations.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team. Able to use engineering blueprint copier, plotters, scanners and printers where applicable.
  • Solid comprehension of coordinate systems, longitude, latitude, elevation, topography and map scales.
  • Knowledge of ETL tools (FME & ArcModel Builder).
  • Creating and maintaining documentation in collaborative web based technology Google Docs and Google Sheets.
  • Strong experience working with Spatial data.
  • Basic understanding of any scripting languages such as ArcPy

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, writing by hand.
  • Rarely use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds

WORKING CONDITIONS:

May work extended hours, evening and weekends.

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures . The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate.

The expected pay range for this position is $82,000 to $135,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
