What We Want

Texas A&M Institute for Genome Sciences and Society’s (TIGSS) is seeking an Associate Research Scientist who will lead TIGSS Genomic core in support of both TAMU and external researchers. The Director will provide oversight to the operations of the service core, project design and consultation for core clients, train users on the technologies, administer budgets and personnel and constantly seek out new technologies and services to bring to the core. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in the life sciences plus ample experience with advanced technologies including RNA-sequencing and spatial transcriptomics. Should be highly motivated and have demonstrated track records in conducting high-quality research on genomic studies, including but not limited to bulk RNA sequencing and single-cell RNA sequencing. The candidate will be an integral member of a highly dynamic core lab team and contribute both technically and intellectually, must be able to switch between leading research, troubleshooting, and communicating with customers as needed. Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

Required Education and Experience:

  • A PhD or terminal degree (e.g., DVM, MD) in the Life Sciences.

  • 3 years of relevant experience such as experience with advanced technologies including RNA-sequencing and spatial transcriptomics.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Exceptional organization and project management skills, including the ability to plan, schedule, and carry out multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Strong hands-on laboratory experience and in- depth knowledge of molecular technologies, such as RNA sequencing, NGS, qPCR, RT-PCR, Sanger, microarrays, nucleic acid extraction, nucleic acid quantification, and others, including an excellent understanding of sequence data and its applications.

  • Background in data analysis using statistical software packages.

  • Attention to detail, safety, good laboratory practice, and good documentation practice.

  • Knowledge of standard laboratory safety procedures including biosafety and hazardous materials.

  • Knowledge of scientific equipment associated with biological sciences.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).

  • Strong organizational and management skills.

  • Ability to analyze data and written materials and give verbal and written recommendations.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and strong organizational and effective problem-solving and high decision-making skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A PhD or terminal degree (e.g., DVM, MD) in Genetics, Genomics, Biology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or related Life Sciences. 5+ years of related experience in a scientific setting or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Management of a research program or resource core.

  • Experience working in a genetics, genomics or molecular biology laboratory,

  • Experience in project management.

  • Bioinformatic Analysis knowledge.

  • Experience managing budgets and finances.

  • Ability to cultivate and maintain professional working relationships with people of diverse backgrounds.


Responsibilites

Project Management- Lead projects related to the design and development and optimization of Genomic services. Independently consider, initiate, and apply to accept new projects as new results and technologies become available.

Lead, mentor and execute (if necessary) laboratory experiments in collaboration with technical staff to generate high-quality data by following best assay and instrument operations practices.

Summarize, present, and document study outcomes to the stakeholders.

Collaborate with different functions, including internal and external researchers, bioinformaticians, and data scientists. Plan, schedule, and carry out multiple projects simultaneously, to reach a successful conclusion of a service project. Make executive decisions regarding the core’s resources and personnel.

Work with Research Enterprise Business Services to develop and maintain a user fee structure.

Participate in departmental, college or university committees, as appropriate.

Research- Utilize and operate core facility scientific equipment to analyze research samples.


Prepare research data reports as required for projects.

Research new technology to bring to the core.

Contribute to and submits appropriate grant proposals for expanding the core.

Participate on peer-reviewed grants as a co-investigator and on publications when an appropriate contribution is made by the incumbent.

Laboratory Maintenance- Assist with coordinating the daily operational activities of the BL-2, BL-3, laboratories to maintain a safe, clean and operational lab environment.

Ensure proper storage and handling of biological materials, as well as and disposal of laboratory waste, including autoclaving materials for removal from biohazard areas.

Ensure adherence to lab standards and practices to maximize safety and operational effectiveness.

Assist in the annual recertification of laboratory containment.

Assist in the development of procedures for the use of laboratory instrumentation.

Assist with the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the facility.

Training and Education-Train core staff members on new technologies and protocols.Assist with hands-on laboratory training for new researchers and employees. Train users on self-service shared resources and equipment.

Prepare and present seminars on the core’s capabilities for outreach and advertisement purposes. These may be in conjunction with biotechnology partners.

Supervisory- Supervise the Lab Manager and senior research technicians.

Assists research staff with routine safety practices to ensure building SOPs are enforced.
