Job Description

--- POSITION INFORMATION:  Provides genetics counseling, assessment, clinic service, research, follow-up, lecturing, mentoring, and documentation.


  • Genetic Counseling.  Provides genetic counseling to patients in an understandable manner.  Facilitates informed decision making about testing, management, and reproductive alternatives.  
  • Assessment.  Assesses psychosocial factors, recognizing social, educational, and cultural issues.  Identifies, coordinates, interprets, and explains genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies.  
  • Clinic Service.  Elicits and interprets individual, family, medical, developmental, and reproductive histories.  Determines mode of inheritance and risk of transmission of genetic conditions and birth defects.
  • Research.  Conducts clinical research in the field of genetics.  Identifies and utilizes community resources that provide medical, educational, financial, and psychosocial support.  
  • Follow Up.  Evaluates the client’s or family’s responses to the condition or risk of recurrence and provides client-centered counseling and anticipatory guidance.  
  • Lecturing.  May give lectures to various personnel and students.
  • Mentoring.  Discusses the inheritance, features, natural history, means of diagnosis, and management of genetic conditions.   May mentor various personnel and students.  
  • Documentation.  Provides accurate written documentation of medical, genetic, and counseling information for families and health care professionals.  
  • As Needed.  Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.


    Job Requirements


    Education: Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling from an  American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC) program or plan to graduate within 6 months.

    Certifications/ Licenses:   Oklahoma Licensed Genetic Counselors or Temporary Genetic Counselor License  or eligible within 90 days of employment.



    • Basic knowledge of practices and procedures in a particular field.
    • Knowledge of HIPAA and the right to privacy and confidentiality.
    • Knowledge of new and innovative approaches to genetic counseling.
    • Ability to gather, evaluate, and interpret data.
    • Ability to give full attention to what is being said in order to understand the problem and be able to make a decision which will benefit the patient.
    • Ability to use logic and reasoning to come up with alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
    • Ability to handle stressful situations.
    • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
    • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
    • Must be self-motivated, work independently, and as a member of a team.
    • Must have critical thinking and innovative skills.
