Description:

The Section of Genetics, Department of Pediatrics is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Genetic Counselor. This position provides care and services to patients at risk for or diagnosed with a genetic disorder. The candidate will educate and advocate for patients and assist them in coordinating necessary medical treatment and testing and provides them with resources when needed.

  • Evaluate and counsel pediatric, perinatal, and adult patients and their families on genetic disorders and diseases pertaining to them.
  • Assist with inpatient consults through the hospital and process of ordering inpatient testing 
  • Review patient records and test results. Obtain and evaluate patient family history to determine patients at risk.
  • Discuss etiology, diagnosis, management, and results with patients and patients’ partners. Recommend and discuss available testing options.
  • Follow up on patient medical appointments and lab testing. Review test results and recommend follow-up testing, if needed.
  • Determine appropriateness of genetic testing. Provide and secure consent and coordinates genetic testing.
  • Assists in the interpretation of the genetic test results.
  • Deliver educational lectures on genetics to residents, students, fellows, and medical personnel at UIC and at other medical centers.
  • Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Genetics/Medical Genetics
  • ABGC (American Board of Genetic Counseling) Certification
  • Licensure as Genetic Counselor in the State of Illinois.
