Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Medical Director and the Practice Manager, and guided by the policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services and the Medical Center (see relevant AHP guidelines for Licensed Genetic Counselors), and in collaboration with the other care providers of the General Genetics Medicine Service (Physicians, Genetic Counselors, Nurses, Dieticians, Social Workers, Genetic Counselor Assistants, and Diet Technicians), the Genetic Counselor uses her/his skills to provide excellent clinical service and patient education to Genetic patients and their families. The Genetic Counselor will comply with the Medical Center house and Telephone Standards. The Genetic Counselor is an integral part of the General Genetics Medicine team and interfaces with the Metabolic, Prenatal, Cardiovascular, Craniofacial, and Cancer Risk groups at UCSF.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

Classification of Genetic Counselor 1 or 2 will be determined based upon the skills, qualifications and years of experience of the selected candidate.

  • Previous experience as a Genetic Counselor intern or Genetic Counselor.
  • Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited training program.
  • Board Certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling
  • Valid Genetic Counselor License or a Temporary Genetic Counselor License issued by the State of California.
  • Current AHA BLS certification
  • Ability to analyze situations, prioritize tasks, develop solutions and make recommendations.
  • Ability to use good judgment and work independently, at times under the pressure of deadlines.
  • Ability to access situations, prioritize workload, develop solutions, and make recommendations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both over the telephone and directly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bi-lingual or multi-lingual capability (Spanish, Cantonese, and Russian) strongly preferred. 
  • Prior experience with EPIC.

 

License/Certification

  • Board certified from the American Board of Genetic Counseling
  • Valid Genetic Counselor License or a Temporary Genetic Counselor License issued by the State of California
  • AHA BLS certification
