Baylor College of Medicine and Department Summary:

This non-tenure track faculty position in the Department of Pathology & Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) will be physically housed in the Division of Genomic Medicine and Department of Pathology at Texas Children's Hospital. We are looking for a Genetic Counselor (Masters' degree in Genetics Counseling, required), Board-eligible or Board Certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. This individual will ensure optimal test utilization management working in close collaboration with pathologists, physician providers, staff and payers involved in genetic and genomic testing, and participate in the evaluation of patients in the hospital and outpatient TCH clinics.

 

Texas Children's Hospital and its Department of Pathology and Division of Genomic Medicine services aim to ensure that the most appropriate, cost-effective testing is ordered for all patients.

Summary

The primary responsibility of the Genetic Counselor will be to evaluate genetic and genomic test orders working in close collaboration with others in the Genomic Stewardship team, clinicians, and genetic counselors in other institutional departments. This evaluation will involve performing patient chart reviews, assessing the clinical necessity of the test, consulting with other genetics providers or genetic counseling services, reviewing prior authorization from payers, selecting the most appropriate test and testing laboratory for the patient, and conveying this information to the clinicians. Additional responsibilities will include assisting the Department with the development of disease and gene-specific testing recommendations including selection of preferred testing laboratories for different indications, as well as assisting physician providers with interpretation of genetic and genomic test results. In addition, the genetic counselor will have the opportunity to see patients in a clinical inpatient setting while working in collaboration with the genetic counselors and geneticists in the Genetics clinic.

 

Regarding contributions to education, this person will be able to participate in training students, residents, and fellows, including molecular genetic pathology (MGP) fellows, in the areas of genetic and genomic test ordering, development of disease and gene-specific testing recommendations and payor policies.
