Description

The primary role of the Genetic Counselor I (GCI) is the provision of clinical cancer genetic counseling services under the auspices of the UCLA Health System. The GCI will work both autonomously and in coordination with medical providers in the evaluation of patients and families at risk for hereditary cancer. Major responsibilities include delivering high-quality hereditary cancer risk assessment, counseling and advising patients and families about the significance of hereditary cancers and implications of genetic testing. The GCI will order germline genetic testing and provide summary guidance to patients and referring providers regarding evaluation and recommendations based on the most up to date national guidelines. Additional duties include supervision of genetic counseling interns, delivery of didactics to genetic counseling students, other healthcare professionals and the public. The genetic counselor serves as an institutional resource for complex medical issues related to hereditary cancer syndromes. The GCI works collaboratively with highly skilled cancer genetic counselors while contributing to the expansion and standardization of cancer genetics care at UCLA. Salary range: $43.88/hr – $57.87/hr

Qualifications

Required: * Masters of Science or Master of Arts in Genetic Counseling conferred by a genetic counseling program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling * Board Certified/board eligible by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. * Current licensure by the state of California Department of Public Health to practice Genetic Counseling. * Expert and current knowledge of the rapidly changing principles and practices of cancer biology and cancer genetics * Expert knowledge in cancer genetic counseling including the ability to assess for and advise on hereditary cancer predisposition * Understanding of the principles of cancer detection, screening and prevention. * Knowledge of the psychosocial aspects of patient care as it relates to cancer genetics, including risk perception, support mechanisms, defense and coping mechanisms, relationships and decision-making processes. * Knowledge of available patient advocacy and support organizations for individuals with inherited cancer predisposition. * Working knowledge of and ability to communicate all elements of informed consent. * Knowledge of existing legislation to protect patients against genetic discrimination * Adherence to ethical standards and guidelines * Post-graduate or advanced knowledge in research methodology. * Ability to read, understand, interpret, and extrapolate relevant information from the medical literature as related to cancer genetics * Demonstrated effective oral, public speaking, and written communication skills. * Effective organizational skills. * Ability to demonstrate independent knowledge-seeking behavior. * Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with individuals from a broad range of socioeconomic, educational, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. * Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, research personnel, and investigators to foster a team-based approach. * Maintain a high standard in customer satisfaction. * Demonstrated computer skills to prepare documents, presentations, spreadsheets, pedigrees, and run risk assessment programs/models. * Knowledge and appropriate execution of IRB policies and procedures. * Strong verbal and presentation skills sufficient for professional presentation and public speaking events. * Ability to recognize, assess, and make appropriate recommendations regarding solutions or clarifications to concerns, problems, and quandaries that should present themselves with regard to patient care. * Ability to effectively communicate solutions or clarifications of concern, problems, and quandaries to the program leadership. * Ability to provide own transportation and work at a variety of practices.
