POSITION SUMMARY:
This position provides a unique opportunity to serve a wide variety of pediatric and adult patients in central and southwest Florida related to general, metabolic, and cardiogenetic indications. We are one of three designated centers for the State of Florida Newborn Screening Program and provide genetics services through the state funded Children's Medical Services program. The services are provided at multiple sites in Tampa as well as via telemedicine. Primary clinical responsibilities include providing genetic counseling services for our patients following established practice guidelines, coordinating genetic testing, and communicating results to patients and referring clinicians. There is frequent interaction and communication with a wide variety of medical professionals, directly through clinical encounters and educational opportunities. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Identifies, organizes, and summarizes pertinent medical and genetic information. Compiles complete family history, draw pedigree, assess risk of genetic or hereditary condition, and provide counseling to individuals and/or families. Performs literature search, access, and summarize information from genetic databases and reference materials. Assists in identifying differential diagnosis and determining patient management needs.
Coordinates ordering of specialized genetic tests and disclosure of results. Obtains informed consent for genetic testing, assess, and address possible ethical concerns. Discusses prognosis and management options with the patient and develop a management plan. Provides written documentation of clinic visit to referring providers. Identifies patients for and coordinate patient participation in appropriate research studies.
Provides on-call support for the Division of Genetics and Metabolism during rotations. Duties may include assistance with referral triage, support to the Newborn Screening program, and urgent patient follow-up. Support for in-patient consults and care coordination.
Provides specialty consultation to other health care professionals including community physicians and other primary care providers. Participates in the education of health care professionals, health sciences students, and the general community. Maintains appropriate documentation of all patient-related encounters in electronic records.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Responsible to a Chair or other appropriate higher-level administrator of a State university. Responsible for teaching, research, service, and related administrative activities.  Responsible for academic advising and related activities. May represent the university, college/school, or department.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
Master's degree from an Accreditation Council of Genetic Counseling (ACGC) accredited program or anticipated graduation of program prior to hire.
Board Certification or eligibility in Genetic Counseling (ABMG, ABGC)
Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Instructor.
PREFERRED:
Functional Spanish language skills are preferred.
At least one (1) year experience of genetic counseling in a pediatric outpatient setting
