The Department of Human Genetics is currently seeking a full time Genetic Counselor 3 to work in Miami. The Genetic Counselor 3 provides general pre- and post-testing support for genetic testing. An employee in this position collects appropriate clinical and family information from clients to schedule appropriate tests, interpret tests results, and prepare final reports.

Core Job Functions

1.    Establishes a mutually agreed upon genetic counseling agenda with the patient and their family.
2.    Elicits appropriate family history and medical information, including pregnancy, developmental, and medical histories.
3.    Conveys genetic, medical, and technical information, such as diagnosis, etiology, and natural history.
4.    Explains technical and medical aspects of diagnostic and screening methods, and reproductive options.
5.    Assesses and calculates genetic and teratogenic risks.
6.    Identifies, synthesizes, organizes, and summarizes pertinent medical and genetic information to identify and access appropriate local, regional, and national resources and services for families with genetic disorders.
7.    Facilitates the identification of a course of action for patients and families which is appropriate in view of their risks, family goals, and ethical and religious standards.
8.    Facilitates the patient’s adjustment to life with a disorder and helps affected family members to cope.
9.    Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions

Cancer Genetic Mutation Registry oversight  
1.    Reviews eligibility criteria for data collection to include, but not limited to, demographics, history, stage, extent of disease, treatment, and outcomes.
2.    Abstracts and enters relevant data into database, ensures completeness, accuracy, and timeliness. 
3.    Follows up with physicians, healthcare providers, family members, patients, or other reliable resources for collection and clarification of missing or incomplete information.    
4.    Prepares statistical reports, utilizing abstracted data, such as analysis of types of diseases treated and survival data. 
5.    Assists with preparation of charts, tables, graphs, and analysis for inclusion in the annual report.    
6.    Performs quality control checks by reviewing and correcting registry data.
7.    Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
8.    Attends Tumor Boards and collects required information.
9.    Tracks and follows-up with patients to determine current health status, and reports changes to required agencies.
10.    Case finding as necessary.
11.    CoC Cancer Registry related standards as necessary
12.    Ad hoc research or quality improvement projects as necessary

Core Qualifications

Education:

Master’s degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Certification in relevant specialty or field

Experience:

Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
