Title: General Mechanic

Grade: SG-12

Hours:  M - F:  7:30 AM - 4:00 PM

Duration:  Permanent



Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled journey-level position which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in a trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade at a school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis.  May be filled from a mandatory reemployment list if one is in effect at the time of appointment.

  • Valid NYS Driver's license required

  • Candidates are expected to be qualified to use negative pressure respirators


Valid NYS Driver's License required; Ability to perform physical tasks including carrying ladders and materials, working from ladders, scaffolds, and lifts; ability to perform a variety of skilled and semiskilled maintenance, repair and installation tasks in a residential setting; ability to safely operate hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment and measuring devices appropriate to the crafts assigned, make repairs to sinks, toilets and showers to keep them fully functional, including drains; ability to repair mortise lock boxes and adjust doors and closers as well as making windows operational; ability to replace electrical receptacles, switches, ballasts, sockets and bulbs, install floor tile, base molding, stair treads and replace ceiling tiles; ability to layout work and diagnose problems as well as read plans, diagrams and blueprints. Must possess a working knowledge of applicable standards in plumbing and electrical regulations. Candidates are expected to train and supervise subordinate maintenance staff when needed.  Ability to plan and execute assignments with considerable independence, and work overtime as required for emergencies and special campus events
